Library to host STEAM fair

Science. Technology. Engineering. Arts. Math. The Pine River Library has been highlighting these key disciplines in 2016 activities for teens every weekday from January through April.

Local youth had the chance to study climatology, extract their own DNA, launch rockets, disassemble a computer and learn leatherworking, to name just a few of the diverse activities offered at the library. Now, as a culmination of the STEAM initiative, sponsored by La Plata Electric Association and First National Bank, the library will host a STEAM Fair for the whole community from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, July 30.

The fair will feature tented booths with hands-on STEAM activities led by local biologists, naturalists, technologists, computer scientists, rocket scientists, engineers, emergency responders, artists, conservationists and more.

There will be music from a local DJ; a blow-up obstacle course; hourly events featuring the Fire Department; a color guard; and trash can drum lessons from Be FRANK. Food will be available from Baked and Tequilas.

"We are excited to involve our youth with hands-on STEAM learning," said Shelley Walchak, director of the library.

"We are too quick to give children answers to memorize instead of problems to solve." All are welcome at the event.
