Is this Ski Country USA? You would never know it by the minimal coverage The Durango Herald gives Lindsay Vonn, who is unarguably the best female alpine skier the United States has ever produced. If Vonn is covered – and that is a big “if” – the coverage is found on the second page of the sports section and certainly does not inform the reader of the magnificence of Vonn’s achievements.
In Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Lindsay just won her 38th downhill victory (the most by a woman in any specialty) and her 76th World Cup win. How about putting her on the front page with the Denver Broncos? After all, she claims Vail as her home.
Local coverage is no doubt an admirable objective. But, that said, not ignoring international excellence in sports events should also be an obvious Herald objective.
