Liquor stores support the community

While Eric Allen’s opinion piece (Herald, April 24) points out some points against allowing alcohol sales in big box stores, and Jeremy Coleman points out others for it (Letters, Herald, May 3), there is another point to consider.

As someone who has worked with non-profits here for the last 20 years, I know that big box chains do not donate easily to the community. Small businesses give generously, bend over backwards, in donating things like wine and beer to fundraisers, auctions, street fairs and other events.

If business for our small liquor stores “dries up,” so could their ability to help small groups trying to do mighty things in our community.
