Liquor World gears up to hand out food boxes to those in need

Store owner plans to gift 250 care packages with dry goods

Durango Liquor World is holding a free food box giveaway Dec. 13 to help people experiencing food insecurity during the coronavirus pandemic.

The store’s owner, Sherry Wertz, had at least $8,000 to spend and more people interested in getting involved, she said Friday. Wertz plans to give away 250 boxes of mixed dry goods at 309 W. College Drive, in the Albertsons parking lot, from noon to 4 p.m.

“Each and every day, I just get more concerned,” Wertz said. “Just talking to the people – bartenders, servers – all of them losing their jobs. I thought, ‘This is what I can do ... to just put a smile on somebody’s face.’”

The food boxes will contain dry goods like beans, corn, pasta, macaroni and cheese, granola bars and oatmeal. Some details of the event are still being organized, Wertz said. Albertsons is offering discounts on items, and other donors are expressing interest.

“I’ve been in that store 37 years,” Wertz said. “Durango’s been good to me and my family, and I just want to pay a little forward. Because COVID isn’t anybody’s fault.”
