Durango resident Lisa McCorry ended her campaign for City Council on Friday, urging people not to vote for her although she is already listed on the ballot.
McCorry, 41, was one of seven candidates who launched campaigns for three seats on Durango City Council ahead of the April 6 election. A landscaper and former chef in Durango’s hospitality industry, McCorry ran as someone who could bring a working-class perspective to the council.
“It is with deep regret that I am announcing the suspension of my campaign for Durango City Council,” McCorry said in a news release Friday. “It has become clear to me that I cannot, in good conscience, reconcile my other responsibilities and serve my community at the level that I want and that the citizens of Durango deserve.”
McCorry could not be reached Monday morning for more information.
McCorry, who moved to Durango in 2003, said she often worked multiple jobs and depended on social support services to get by. She prioritized housing affordability in her campaign, advocated for the inclusion of underrepresented communities and aimed to help Durango continue to be a multigenerational, multiracial and multicultural community.
“I have come to this difficult decision after much consideration, and acknowledge the inconvenience it may cause,” she said in the news release. “I want to extend my deepest gratitude to everyone who has supported me throughout the campaign.”
She said people should not vote for her. If elected, a resignation would cause the City Council to choose to either appoint an unelected replacement or hold a special election.
There are six remaining candidates vying for three open seats on the council.
Ballots were mailed Friday to residents of Durango who are eligible electors. Ballots must be returned no later than 7 p.m. April 6 to be counted.
