I enjoyed the article on Capt. Leo Lloyd of the Durango Fire Protection District (Herald, July 3). He’s a remarkable man, and I’m glad to have known Leo when I was a nurse in the Mercy Hospital emergency room.
But the article left out another Leo Lloyd – his grandfather.
Dr. Lloyd came to Durango in 1936, and was a co-owner of the old Ochsner Hospital (currently known as the Gable House). He and a surgeon owned the hospital until drafted in 1942 during World War II. They sold the hospital to the county and it became the original Community Hospital.
Lloyd returned to Durango after the war and became one of the community’s best known and loved residents. Although a board-certified internist (the only one in the Four Corners for 30 years), he made house calls, delivered thousands of babies, campaigned with the health department for safer drinking water and was instrumental in starting the intensive care unit at Mercy.
Capt. Leo Lloyd is carrying on the proud tradition of caring for the people in our community.
