Demolition tickets on sale Monday

The La Plata County Fair announced that tickets for the 2016 Demolition Derby will go on sale at 8 a.m. Monday.

Tickets for the annual event, which pits local drivers in a “race for survival,” are $15 for all ages.

The derby is slated for Aug. 13, with gates opening at 10 a.m., and the event begins at noon.

Tickets will be available at the following locations, beginning at 8 a.m. or the time the business opens: Durango Music, Handlebar Motorsports, La Plata County Fair Grounds, Durango Muffler, Mill Street Drug in Bayfield, and Walker’s Do It Best Hardware in Ignacio.

The 2016 La Plata County Fair will be held Aug. 10-14 at the La Plata County Fairgrounds. All five days will feature entertainment for the whole family, including a carnival, displays, exhibits, a livestock auction, dancing, food and more.

Farmers Market joins nutrition partnership

The Durango Farmers Market will participate in a statewide partnership that has just been awarded a Food Insecurity Nutrition Incentive grant by the a U.S. Department of Agriculture to launch “Double Up Food Bucks Colorado.”

The program expands the amount of fruits and vegetables recipients of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP, formerly food stamps) can purchase.

Coloradans who receive food stamps are provided $1.41 per meal or $4.23 per day on average, which can make it challenging to purchase fruits and vegetables.

With Double Up, SNAP recipients will receive up to $20 in locally grown fruits and vegetables when they use their SNAP benefits at participating farmers markets. SNAP benefits will be matched dollar for dollar.

Double Up will be implemented through 30 farmers markets, including three in Southwest Colorado: Cortez, Pagosa Springs and Durango farmers markets. All three markets will partner with Cooking Matters, the local nutrition education program, in order to promote the incentive to qualifying families by providing farmers market education tours.

A list of partners participating in Double Up Food Bucks Colorado can be found at www.DoubleUpColorado.org.
