Free firewood available to Durango residents

The city of Durango Parks Department, in collaboration with local fire experts is conducting a fuels-reduction program at Dalla Mountain Park.

There are several piles of dry lumber which can be gathered for firewood. Durango Parks and Recreation Department is making this firewood available at no cost to city residents for collection and personal use. The entrance gate to the park is at 3234 Junction St., and it will be open from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday and Friday. All vehicles entering the park must remain on the roadway. It may be necessary to cut the longer sections of firewood. A city parks employee will be present at all times when the gate is open.

Film about running to be screened

“Running the Edge: The Colorado Trail” will be screened at 7 p.m. Thursday at The Smiley Building, 1309 East Third Ave.

Benefiting Trails 2000 and sponsored by the Durango Running Club, the film recounts the journey of family man and ultrarunner, Scott Jaime, as he runs the entire 486-mile Colorado Trail in 8 days, 7 hours, 40 minutes and 17 seconds, achieving a new fastest known time. Ska Brewing Co. will provide beer for purchase, proceeds of which also benefit Trails 2000. Tickets are $8 or $10 the day of the screening. Botanical society to host nursery tour

The Durango Botanical Society will host the annual Nursery Tour on Thursday.

Participants will meet at Durango Nursery and Supply on Kay Cee Lane at 4 p.m., then caravan to Native Roots Garden Center, ending at 7:30 p.m. This private tour from nursery professionals will focus on what’s new for the garden in 2014 and a behind-the -scenes look at each nursery. Refreshments and live music by The Animas City Slackers will end the tour.

Historical fund staff to host roundtable

History Colorado’s State Historical Fund staff will host a state holding roundtable to help potential grant applicants put together a grant application from 10 a.m. to noon June 6 at the Pagosa Springs Town Hall, 551 Hot Springs Blvd.

The roundtable will give grant applicants a chance to interact with fellow applicants to learn best practices and gain advice about putting together a grant application. The next grant round deadline is Oct. 1. History Colorado’s State Historical Fund supports community heritage through tangible and highly visible historic-preservation projects for direct and demonstrable public benefit.

LPEA to host its annual meeting

Results of director elections in three of four districts of La Plata Electric Association will be announced at the electric cooperative’s annual meeting Thursday at the Community Concert Hall at Fort Lewis College.

Registration begins at 5 p.m., with the business meeting commencing at 6:30 p.m. A reception during the registration period will feature hors d’oeuvres and the music of Tim Sullivan and his band Narrow Gauge.

Support groups announced in Durango

Alternative Horizons is offering a 10-week women’s group focused on healthy relationships.

The group will meet from noon to 1:30 p.m. Tuesdays beginning May 27.

Alternative Horizons also will offer a free eight-week group for girls who will be in sixth or seventh grade next year. This group will cover issues such as self-esteem, body image, healthy relationships, assertiveness, diversity, communication and more. The group will meet from 2:30 to 4 p.m. Tuesdays.
