Durango Cowboy Poetry Parade announces winners

The Durango Cowboy Poetry Gathering announces winners of its 27th annual Cowboy Parade:

Most Impressive Horse Entry: 4 Corners Backcountry.

Most Impressive Mule/Donkey Entry: Mediterranean Miniature Donkeys.

City of Durango to spray weeds starting this week

The city of Durango will be spraying weeds in these areas beginning Tuesday, weather permitting:

Riverview Sports Complex.

Santa Rita Park.

Hillcrest View Park and Jenkins Ranch Park.

Rio Vista Park and Animas City Park.

Greenmount Cemetery.

Fort Lewis College Softball Complex.

The city has contracted with Tres Mesa for noxious weed abatement. The herbicides that will be used are called 2-4-D, Amine, Perspective and Confront.

Digital camera, smartphone photo class offered Tuesday

The Durango Natural Foods Co-op will offer “Digital and Smartphone Photography” with Kit Frost at 6 p.m. Tuesday in Suite 26 of the Smiley Building, 1309 East Third Ave.

The cost is $18 for members and $22 for nonmembers. Payment can be made at the co-op, 575 East Eighth Ave.

Frost will teach participants to properly use their digital camera or phone and pass along simple techniques to capture fall colors.

Frost will talk about how to operate your camera, composition, shutter speed and aperture.

Participants should bring their digital camera, memory card and a fully charged battery.

Hermosa Park Road traffic delays expected until Friday

Delays will continue on the Hermosa Park Road (Forest Road No. 578) through Friday to allow for full completion of road resurfacing of five miles of this road between its intersection with the Relay Creek Road and Upper Hermosa Trailhead.

Travelers should expect to encounter up to one-hour delays from 8 a.m. to noon and from 1 to 5 p.m.

The road will be open before 8 a.m., from noon to 1 p.m., and after 5 p.m. Access to Relay Creek Road (Forest Road No. 579), Upper Hermosa Trailhead and points beyond are affected by the closure.

Gravel is being transported by dump trucks from a pit up the Relay Creek Road to road graders, which are blading and compacting the new road surface. Signs are posted and Forest Service employees are offering traffic-control.

Durango Bird Club to host free bird walk Saturday

The Durango Bird Club’s October field trip will be birding along the Animas River Trail from Escalante Middle School toward the U.S. Highway 550 bridge and back from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. Saturday.

Participants should park at or around Escalante Middle School and meet at the front flag pole.

The bird walk is weather permitting. The walk is free and participants should bring along binoculars, journal, water and snacks.
