Effort to change constitution begins

The Raise the Bar initiative seeks to make it harder to amend Colorado’s Constitution by requiring constitutional ballot initiative proponents to gather signatures from 2 percent of all registered voters in each of Colorado’s 35 state Senate districts.

The proposal also requires approval from 55 percent of voters in November to amend the Colorado Constitution.

Similar events will be held in Alamosa, Craig, Fort Morgan, Colorado Springs, Aurora, Grand Junction, Pueblo and Frisco.

Futuristic vehicles coming to town

4CORE in partnership with Clean Cities and the Colorado Energy Office is sponsoring an exciting alternative fuels event from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday at La Plata County Fairgrounds, 2500 Main Ave.

Industry experts will speak on propane vehicles, the latest electric vehicle technology and charging-station information. Compressed natural gas and propane trucks will be available for test drives as well as electric vehicles.

Load restriction set for Wolf Creek Pass

No oversized loads will be allowed over Wolf Creek Pass from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. beginning Thursday. Otherwise, regular traffic flow will be maintained.

Maintenance crews will be cleaning and washing the walls of the snowshed and the tunnel, both located on the east side of the pass.

Role of letterpress in digital age explained

The Mancos Common Press, a nonprofit, welcomes Prof. Matt Neff for a presentation on the role of the letterpress in the digital age.

The free presentation will be held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. June 9 at the Durango Public Library.

This presentation will explain the resurgence of both letterpress and printmaking technologies and the many emergent applications for both individual artists and collaborative efforts between printmakers, paper makers, book binders and others utilizing historic presses.

Neff teaches and runs the Common Press at the University of Pennsylvania.

CDOT crews painting Mesa Verde overpass

The Colorado Department of Transportation started a preventative maintenance project Tuesday on the U.S. Highway 160 overpass to Mesa Verde National Park.

Crews are sandblasting, washing and painting the bridge.

Traffic will be routed over the exit ramps, and travelers will be able to enter and exit the park at all times.

Work will take place from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday until the end of July.

The $300,000 preventative maintenance project was awarded to Jita Contracting Inc. of Durango.
