The San Juan Mountains Association is hosting free nature hikes at 9:45 a.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays through Aug. 18 at Purgatory Resort.
The program begins with a free chairlift ride, followed by a guided hike with a naturalist. No preregistration is necessary.

The Center of Southwest Studies at Fort Lewis College is one of more than 2,000 museums across the country to offer free admission to military personnel and their families this summer in collaboration with the National Endowment for the Arts, Blue Star Families and the Department of Defense. The Center of Southwest Studies at Fort Lewis College will offer free admission to the nation’s active duty military personnel including National Guard and Reserve and their families until Labor Day 2016.
The program is part of Blue Star Museums, a collaboration among the National Endowment for the Arts, Blue Star Families, the Department of Defense and more than 2,000 museums across the United States. The complete list of participating museums is available at arts.gov/bluestarmuseums.
Heart Safe La Plata is hosting an award ceremony at 1 p.m. Friday at Sky Ute Casino.
The group would like to thank responders who have saved a life. On March 24, one of the program’s public access defibrillators was used to restart a person’s heart by casino personnel. That person is alive today because of the quick actions of a few people. Heart Safe La Plata believes these responders deserve public recognition.
To help ensure safety and reliability of electricity transmission, La Plata Electric Association will begin power pole inspections in various areas of La Plata County by June 9 and continue through the summer until complete. The pole inspection may require access through private property, including backyards and fenced areas. Every effort will be made to avoid inconveniencing property owners.
LPEA has contracted Alamon, a company specializing in utility pole inspections, to perform the service, which will begin in the areas served by the following substations:
Trimble Substation, serving properties in the Animas Valley, from North Main Avenue up U.S. Highway 550 to the Glacier Club.Sunnyside Substation, serving properties and subdivisions south on Highway 550 to the New Mexico line.Spring Creek Substation, serving properties and subdivisions from the city limits north on Florida Road (County Road 240).Westside Substation, serving properties on the northwest side of downtown Durango, west to Lightner Creek.Questions or concerns regarding the pole inspections can be directed to LPEA Superintendent Curt Marlatt, at 979-382-3583.
Durango Nature Studies will offer “Weekly Wee Walk Abouts” from 10 to 11 a.m. each Wednesday from June 8 through August.
Program naturalists will meet parents and children by the pavilion at Rotary Park for an hour of guided activities and walking along the river trail. No reservations are necessary.
The cost is $5 per child, but is free for members. Group discounts may also apply.
