Methodist Thrift Store to give away books
The Methodist Thrift Shop, 986 East Second Ave., is offering free children’s books to all Durango School District 9-R teachers.
Teachers should check-in at the back counter with their school ID to receive this special. The store is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday to Saturday.
Residents reminded to latch trash cans
Bear Smart Durango reminds residents to keep bear-resistant trash containers latched and secured at all times, except for the morning of trash collection.
Local businesses should do the same and educate employees on proper use. In addition, restaurants and fast-food establishments can contact City Code Enforcement at 375-4930 for suggestions on making grease disposal more wildlife-friendly. If city-provided bear-resistant residential trash containers or commercial dumpsters are damaged, call city of Durango Sustainable Services at 375-5004 to schedule repairs, or contact the waste hauler. City residents and businesses can order bear-resistant trash containers anytime by calling 375-5004. County residents should contact a local waste hauler. Phoenix Recycling and Baker Sanitation offer certified residential bear-resistant trash containers.
City residents can report incidents of bears getting into trash by calling City Code Enforcement at 375-4930. County residents should call Central Dispatch at 385-2900.
Mystery book club to meet in Ignacio
The Mystery Book Club will meet at 11 a.m. Monday at the Ignacio Community Library, 470 Goddard Ave.
The club will feature the classic novel Laura by Vera Caspary. The discussion will be followed by lunch and a showing of the movie based on the book.

Local senior center to hold variety show
A free preview of the Durango Silver Belles Variety Show will take place at 12:15 p.m. Monday at the Durango/La Plata Senior Center, 2424 Main Ave.
To register for lunch, call 382-6445. Lunch is a $4 donation for people 60 and older, and a $7 fee for people younger than 60.
Senior Services Transportation also will provide transportation for seniors to attend the Brass Band Festival on Aug. 16. The bus will leave the center at 10:30 a.m. to attend the festival at noon. The group will then have a late lunch at The Pickle Barrel and return to the center around 5 p.m. The cost is $10 for transportation.

Rotary clubs to hold ice-cream social
A Rotary Day Ice Cream Social will take place from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Rotary Park, east of Main Avenue and north of 15th Street on the Animas River.
The public is invited to this free event to learn more about what Rotary does, both locally and internationally. Durango’s three Rotary Clubs will be present with displays showcasing recent projects such as Navajo solar lights, shelter tents and scholarships. Come for ice-cream sundaes and music from the Kitchen Jam Band and learn about the power of Rotary, one of the largest humanitarian service organizations in the world.
