Snowshoe or ski at Mesa Verde

The Morefield Campground winter trails at Mesa Verde will be open for a Full Moon Snowshoe and Ski event for snowshoeing and cross country skiing from 6 to 10 p.m. Saturday.

It’s free and open to all ages.

Participants should dress for the cold and bring skis or snowshoes, appropriate gear and a headlamp or flashlight.

Continuing education gets a refresh

DurangoLearns offers a new model for continuing education: Instructors around Durango have joined forces to offer a variety of courses.

A sample of offerings includes: “Introduction to Italian Language,” “Your Personal Brand,” and “Basic Digital Photography.”

Participants may join DurangoLearns for a low yearly membership fee and take classes at reduced rates as well as enjoy discounts at DurangoSpace and other businesses around town. Courses will be held at a variety of locations to promote and support local businesses.

Breast-feeding workshop to be held

A breast-feeding workshop for expectant parents will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Feb. 3 in Kids Rock, 563 Main Ave.

Snack and breast-feeding booklets will be provided.

Hear about skiing’s history in Durango

Former Animas Museum director and longtime Purgatory ski patroller Robert McDaniel will reprise his talk, “Long Boards & Rope Tows – Skiing in La Plata County,” at 1:30 p.m. Jan. 30 at the Animas Museum, 3065 West Second Ave.

The presentation, on the history of skiing in the Durango area, will coincide with the opening of a new exhibit at the museum, “Ski Story,” which celebrates the 50th anniversary of Purgatory Resort. Admission is free.

2 Winter Train cars benefit the Goose

The Durango & Silverton Winter Train on Feb. 5 will pull two reserved coaches behind its regularly scheduled train to benefit the Galloping Goose Historical Society and the Ridgway Railroad Museum.

The train leaves at 9:45 a.m.; passengers should be in seats by 9:15. The return time is about 2:45 p.m.

The $125 donation includes a box lunch; choice of wine, beer or soft drinks; and a GGHS gift bag with a “Running Goose” glass. The heated coaches stop at Cascade Canyon, a natural, scenic canyon with picnic tables and rock fireplace along the Animas River.

The free D&SNG Museum is open from 1 to 4 p.m. every day the train operates.
