Film will be shown before Grandin visit

In preparation for the visit of the featured guest author for the Fort Lewis College and Community Common Reading Experience, Dr. Temple Grandin, there will be a showing of the award-winning HBO film “Temple Grandin” at 6 p.m. Tuesday at the Pine River Library, 395 Bayfield Center Drive in Bayfield.

Grandin is an internationally famous animal scientist who is autistic. She has designed one-third of all livestock-handling facilities in the U.S. using insight from her own experience with autism. Her book, Thinking in Pictures: My Life with Autism, is the book for the 2015 Common Reading Experience.

She will give a free public talk and book signing at 7 p.m. Sept. 30 at Whalen Gymnasium at FLC. There are multiple events before and after Sept. 30.

Veterans committee to host breakfast

Durango Elks Lodge Veterans Committee will host breakfast from 9 to 11 a.m. the first and third Sundays of the month at the lodge, 901 East Second Ave.

Participants should use the Ninth Street entrance. The cost is $5 for veterans and $6 for non-veterans.

Meditation course to begin Wednesday

A six-week course in beginning meditation will take place at the Durango Dharma Center, 208 East Animas Road (County Road 250). The center is located in the second building on the left off Metz Lane.

Taught by dharma leader Katherine Barr, the class will be from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday and continues Wednesdays in October through Nov. 4. There will be no class Sept. 30.

The class will offer an experiential introduction to meditation and the Buddha’s teachings. Participants will have an opportunity to develop the practice of mindfulness, as taught by the Buddha – a practice of moment-to-moment observation that cultivates a clear, stable and non-judgmental awareness. This practice can bring more calmness to people’s daily lives as well as gradually dissolve the barriers to clear seeing. All are welcome.
