Understanding angels, astro-soul workshop

A “Deeper Understanding of Your Angels and Astro-Soul” workshop will take place from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday in the Windom Room of the Durango Community Recreation Center, 2700 Main Ave.

Participants will understand, explore and experience: deeper communication with their angels; astro-travel as a free soul in the universe; reincarnation and the wisdom gathered from past lives; one’s life purpose and how it fits into the big picture; and how to raise vibration and keep energy positive.

Participants should bring their own lunch. The cost is $85.

Pura Vida celebrates one-year anniversary

Pura Vida Healthcare will celebrate its one-year anniversary with an open house from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at 160 E. 12th St., suite 1.

There will be food, wine, music and a chance to meet and speak with the practitioners in the downtown location.

Pura Vida is home to seven practitioners, each with their own holistic modality. It offers naturopathic medicine, acupuncture, massage, cranial sacral therapy, kinesiology, reiki, mental-health counseling and energy work.

Eat Local continues at Farmers Market

The Eat Local Celebration will continue with festivities from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday at the Durango Farmers Market, in the First National Bank parking lot, 259 W. Ninth St.

Chef Safari from the Strater Hotel and Chef Ryan Lowe from the Ore House Restaurant will offer samples of locally sourced dishes and will be available to discuss their involvement in the local food system. Local First board member Scott Smith and staff member ZacharyRay also will be on hand to answer questions.

Local First is a community organization dedicated to preserving La Plata County’s local character and economic stability through the support and advocacy of locally owned, independent businesses. Local First’s annual Eat Local Celebration highlights La Plata County’s local food system.

City of Durango to spray for weeds

The city of Durango will spray weeds from Tuesday to Oct. 3 at these locations:

Buckley Park on Tuesday.

Carnegie Building, Mason Center, Third Avenue Parkway and Downtown Brown on Sept. 26.

Chapman Hill, Rotary Park, Roosa Park, Triangle Park, Crestview Park, Fassbinder Park and Viles Park on Sept. 29.

Durango Community Recreation Center and Rank Park on Oct. 3.

The city has contracted with Scott’s Pro-Lawn for turf fertilization and abatement of noxious weeds. The herbicide that will be used is called Vessel Broadleaf Herbicide and Q4 if thistles are present.

KDUR radio program to host guest speakers

In preparation for the visit of the featured guest author for the Fort Lewis College and Community Common Reading Experience, Dr. Temple Grandin, KDUR’s Community Radio 91.9/93.9-FM Making a Difference, will host guests on related topics from 5:30 to 6 p.m. from mid-September to mid-November.

Grandin is an internationally famous animal scientist who happens to be autistic.

She has designed one-third of all livestock-handling facilities in the United States using insight from her own experience with autism.

Her book, Thinking in Pictures: My Life with Autism, is the chosen book for 2015. She will do a free public talk and book signing at 7 p.m. Sept. 30 in Whalen Gymnasium at FLC. There are multiple college and community events before and after Sept. 30.

Free support group available to women

Alternative Horizons has openings for a free eight-week group for women who would like to heal the hurts of being in an abusive relationship.

The group will meet from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesdays and will start Sept. 22. Participants will learn: healthy communication; mindfulness and stress-reduction techniques; moving beyond the trauma; reclaiming one’s inner self; and creating better boundaries.

Water-treatment plant to host open house

The city of Durango invites the public to a community open house from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Durango Wastewater Treatment Plant, 105 S. Camino del Rio.

Participants will learn about day-to-day Wastewater Treatment Plant operations. Utilities staff will provide tours of the Wastewater Treatment Plant and will be available to respond to questions about the existing plant.

Light refreshments will be provided.

The public also is invited to take a “Go Where You Go” tour of the Wastewater Treatment Plant for a behind-the scenes look at the plant operations. Tours are offered from 4 to 5 p.m. each Wednesday, and they are limited in size.
