Horseback rides aid wounded veterans

For the last several years, Circle K Ranch, 27758 Colorado Highway 145 in Dolores, and Telluride Adaptive Sports have partnered to offer horseback riding to the Wounded Warriors Program. Some of the riders have extreme spinal injuries that require the use of a special saddle, called an adaptive saddle.

Saddle maker Randy Bird will demonstrate the adaptive saddle on May 30. Bird suffered a spinal injury, and he is paralyzed from the chest down.

His therapy saddle has enabled him to be the only paralyzed contestant in the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association and win Reserve World Champion at the American Paint Horse Association World Show. Other activities that day will include a silent auction, Western-style dinner and entertainment with Western performer, RJ Vandygriff, a member of the Texas Musicians Hall of fame. All proceeds will go toward the purchase of the saddles.

Dinner and show tickets are $25 each for ages 12 and older and $12 for ages 5 to 11.
