Applications accepted for Court of Appeals

The Supreme Court Nominating Commission invites qualified attorneys to apply for a Colorado Court of Appeals judgeship created by the appointment of Richard L. Gabriel to the Colorado Supreme Court, effective Sept. 1.

The commission will meet Sept. 1-2 to interview applicants and select nominees for appointment by the governor. To be eligible, the applicant must be a qualified elector in Colorado and must have been admitted to the practice of law in Colorado for five years. The annual salary for a court of appeals judge is currently $166,176. The initial term of office is a provisional term of two years. Thereafter, the incumbent judge, if retained by the voters, has a term of eight years.

Application forms are available at the office of the ex-officio chair of the Nominating Commission, Chief Justice Nancy E. Rice, 2 E. 14th Ave., Denver, CO 80203; and the office of the District Administrator of any of the 22 judicial districts. Applications also are available at https://www.courts.state.co.us. Applications must be received by the ex-officio chair no later than 4 p.m. July 31. Any person wishing to suggest a candidate to fill the vacancy may do so by letter submitted to any member of the nominating commission, with a copy to the ex-officio chair, no later than 4 p.m. July 24.

Durango announces street closures

The Fourth of July festivities will necessitate some street closures in Durango in the late afternoon and into the evening.

Main Avenue will be closed to traffic and parking between College and 12th Street, as well as 11th Street from Main to East Second Avenue, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. for the Stars & Stripes Parade. The parade staging area will be on the 500 block of Main and on Fifth Street from Main to East Third Avenue. This area will be closed to traffic and parking starting at 4:30 p.m., and the area will re-open by 7 p.m. The 800 block of Main is the location of the street dance, and that block will be closed to traffic and parking from 3:45 to 10 p.m. The 800 block of Main Avenue is expected to re-open to vehicles at 10:30 p.m.

SMART 160 Trail meeting to be held

The city of Durango is evaluating the Animas River Trail to SMART 160 Trail connection, with consideration of several alternative trail alignments.

The trail planning and design involves the area between River Road and the existing section of the SMART 160 Trail at the west end of the Grandview interchange.

To participate in the evaluation and selection process, interested members of the community are encouraged to attend a joint meeting of the city’s Parks and Recreation Advisory Board and Multi-Modal Advisory Board at 5 p.m. Wednesday at the Durango Community Recreation Center, 2700 Main Ave. Public comments will be accepted at the meeting and via email through the end of July at rec@durangogov.org.
