Library to host bookmark contest

All elementary, middle school and high school students are invited to enter the Friends of the Durango Public Library annual Bookmark Contest.

This year, winners will be selected from each of the three age categories. Kindle Paperwhites will be awarded to the three first-place winners. Maria’s Bookshop gift certificates will be awarded to the three runners-up. In addition, 1,000 bookmarks will be printed of each first-place-winning entry noting the artist’s name and school. And 500 bookmarks will be printed of each entry from the runners-up.

Bookmarks must include an original illustration related to reading or a specific book, with a relevant quote. Overall design may be either vertical or horizontal. Artwork must be capable of downsizing to 2” x 8” bookmark size.

All bookmark artwork and applications must be submitted to the front desk at the Durango Public Library no later than Oct. 21. Applications are available at the library and at all local schools.

Residents invited to talk about mine spill

Voices from the Animas: A Durango Community Listening Event will take place from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday in the Extension Building at the La Plata County Fairgrounds, 2500 Main Ave.

This is a free, communitywide event to listen and share thoughts about various perspectives on the Animas River spill.

Animas High School students have spent the past month conducting StoryCorps interviews with people in the region about the spill. Their interviews will be available for the public to listen to at this event, and recording equipment will be available to collect more interviews as well.

9-R candidate, ballot issues forum Thursday

The League of Women Voters of La Plata County will hold a Durango School District 9-R Board of Directors candidate and state and local ballot issues forum at 5:30 p.m. Thursday in council chambers of Durango City Hall, 949 East Second Ave.

iPad skills class offered at library

Durango Public Library, 1900 East Third Ave., will offer a Basic iPad Skills Class at 9:30 a.m. Friday.

The class will give participants the foundation needed to start using an iPad. The group will cover the basics, such as: home screen; applications management; how to make and organize folders/apps logically; setting up email; working with photos; and working with iCloud and what it can do. Lastly, the group will look at new features offered with the iPad’s operating system (iOS 9).

Mindful living is topic of lunchtime talk

“Four Keys of Mindful Living,” a free lunchtime talk, will take place from noon to 1 p.m. Friday at Inhabit, 1970 East Third Ave.

Developing the four keys of living mindfully – attention, values, wisdom and an open heart – help people bring attention and intention into all of their activities. John Bruna, co-founder of the Mindful Life Program, will lead the talk. Bruna has a background as a counselor, former Buddhist monk, mindfulness and dharma teacher. Bruna will also facilitate the Mindful Life Programs’s Foundations Course Oct. 10 and 11, also at Inhabit.
