Sale will benefit editor with cancer

Ute Eckstein, an independent distributor for Thirty-One, will hold a benefit sale for Melanie Mazur, who has stage 1 breast cancer. Mazur is the editor of the Pine River Times.

Thirty-One offers bags, purses, jewelry, organization items and totes. The benefit sale runs through Thursday, with 20 percent of all proceeds being donated to Mazur to help cover medical bills.

Turtle Lake Refuge to offer plant program

Turtle Lake Refuge will host the Local Wild Living Soil Program from Feb. 9 to April 27.

This educational program is an exploration of wild edible and medicinal plants, living food nutrition, permaculture design and holistic health. Class times will be from 9 a.m. to noon Tuesday and Wednesday in town.

Metal clay to be discussed Monday

The Four Corners Gem & Mineral Club will host a free educational lecture presentation, “Metal Clay,” from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Monday at the Rock Shop, in the 2300 block of Main Avenue in the alley by Brookside Park.

Nancy Fredrick Conrad will talk about types of metal clay, including copper, bronze, steel, white satin, white bronze, pure silver, sterling silver and gold.

Participants will learn the history and development of the metals as well as the methods of use and technical information. A short demonstration will be provided accompanied by samples.

This talk will precede classes taught by Conrad, beginning Jan. 18. The first series of four evening classes will use base metals. A class using silver will be scheduled later.

Local time bank offers orientation

Hour Exchange La Plata (HELP), the local time bank, invites the public to a free introductory talk and software orientation from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, 910 East Third Ave.

People considering joining the time bank should bring a laptop (preferable) or mobile device for the orientation.

The Southwest Colorado Workforce Board will meet from 10:30 a.m. to noon Wednesday at the La Plata County Fairgrounds in the Florida Room, 2500 Main Ave.

Water fluoridation to be discussed

Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment Executive Director and Chief Medical Officer Larry Wolk will give a presentation about community water fluoridation at the city of Durango Utilities Commission meeting at 4:30 p.m. Monday in council chambers of Durango City Hall.

The department of public health recommends community water fluoridation as the best way to protect the oral health of all Coloradans.

Wolk will present with other state and local officials in attendance to demonstrate support of local fluoridation efforts.
