Mercy Medical Center to host blood drives
Mercy Regional Medical Center will offer these blood drives:
From 3 to 6:45 p.m. April 1 in Conference Room A (by the cafeteria).
From 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. April 4 in the Bloodmobile, which will be parked in the lot by the Healing Gardens toward the entrance to the cafeteria.
Every donor will receive a $5 gift card to the Merciful Mug at the main entrance of the hospital. A new self-interview process, which means donors can do the interview at home before the appointment, is available.
The interview has to be done the same day as the donation. To complete the interview, visit www.unitedbloodservices.org and go to the lower left hand corner of the page titled “health history.” When finished, print out the “fast-track ticket.”

Slideshow of bear study to be given Tuesday
Bear Smart Durango Director Bryan Peterson will give a slideshow presentation on his involvement with a 2011 bear study in remote northwest Alaska at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday at Open Shutter Gallery, 735 Main Ave.
This noninvasive study for Kobuk Valley National Park used specially trained working dogs to find and collect bear scats to better determine population density and habitat use by brown and black bears within the park.

One Billion Rising event to be held today
Sexual Assault Services Organization will host the One Billion Rising event from noon to 1 p.m. today at Buckley Park.
The event will be an opportunity to rise, release and dance together to end sexual violence in Durango and beyond.
Local nature group to host bird walk
A bird walk will be hosted by Durango Nature Studies at 9 a.m. Wednesday at For the Birds, 1560 East Second Ave.
The walks last about one hour and 15 minutes. Bring binoculars. The walks are free, but donations to the hosting group are welcome.

Rotary Club of Durango to meet Tuesday
Angie Beach, executive director of Music in the Mountains, will speak to the Rotary Club of Durango at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Strater Hotel, 699 Main Ave.
Presenting on the importance of music education and what Music in the Mountains is doing to help support music education in our community, Beach also will share the highlights of the upcoming 2014 festival season. Beach is a graduate of Fort Lewis College and an alumnus of Leadership La Plata, an education arm of the Durango Chamber of Commerce. Visitors are welcome.

Community Cinema screening to take place
Community Cinema, presented by Mancos Public Library and the Independent Television Service will offer an advance screening of “Las Marthas” at 6 p.m. Thursday at the Mancos Public Library, Community Meeting Room 211 E. First St.
Dating from the aftermath of the U.S.-Mexican War, the annual colonial-inspired Martha Washington Society debutante ball in Laredo, Texas, is unlike any other. Las Marthas follows two Mexican American girls carrying this tradition on their shoulders during a time of economic uncertainty and tension over immigration. After the film, light refreshments will be served and a community discussion will take place.

Cooking Matters to offer grocery tours
Cooking Matters will offer free grocery store tours from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday at the Durango Walmart with helpful information about shopping for healthful, tasty foods on a limited budget.
Tours begin every 15 minutes with the last tour beginning at 4 p.m.; additional tours offered in Spanish will take place at 2:30 and 3:45 p.m. A free shopping card, reusable bag, booklet with tips and recipes and more will be offered to all tour participants.

Free parenting workshop available
A free workshop for parents of elementary school age children will take place from noon to 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Bowman Hall, located next to the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Durango, 419 San Juan Drive.
Parents will listen to session one of Calm Parenting by Debbie Pincus and local Parent/Youth Coach Liza Tregillus will facilitate discussion and questions.
