The special guest will be U.S. Army Lt. Col. (Ret.) Allen West. West was born and raised in Atlanta in the same neighborhood where Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. once preached. He is the third of four generations of military members in his family.
During his 22-year Army career, he commanded troops and was deployed to several combat zones. He was elected to Congress in 2010. A frequent commentator on Fox News and a sought-after speaker, he is the author of Guardian of The Republic.

Mercy Regional Medical Center and Mercy Orthopedic Associates invite the community to celebrate National Osteoporosis Awareness Month this May by enjoying a bone-healthy lunch special on Thursday.
The meal will be served from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Mercy’s Garden Terrace Café, 1010 Three Springs Blvd. The meal, which will be offered at a special discounted rate, will include teriyaki salmon with bok choy.
According to the National Osteoporosis Foundation, osteoporosis is a bone disease that occurs when the body loses too much bone, makes too little bone or both.
The La Plata County Extension Office will present “Equipment and Ideas to save Food.”
Participants will experience the differences between five vacuum sealers and three dehydrators and a variety of canning equipment, including a jam maker and an electric water bath canner.

The Vallecito Service League will hold its annual Chili Supper plus Chili Challenge and Dessert Derby June 12. Proceeds will be used for the Vallecito fireworks display on July 3.
The event will take place from 5 to 7 p.m. June 12 at the Lake Vallecito Events Center, 17252 County Road 501.
Chefs can enter the Chili Challenge for $10 and the Dessert Derby competition for a $5 entry fee.

The Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 4031 will hold Buddy Poppy distribution from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday and Friday at Walmart.
They will distribute the Buddy Poppy from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Walmart, Kroeger’s and both City Market stores.
The VFW will also sponsor a free concert from 4:30 to 6 p.m. Tuesday at Rotary Park by the 101st Army Airborne Centennial Winds Band. Food and drinks will be available on the adjacent VFW lawn.
