Former Army officer and author to visit

Former Army Capt. Luis Carlos Montalván and his service dog, Tuesday, are coming to Durango.

Montalván is the author of The New York Times bestseller Until Tuesday and a children’s book titled Tuesday Tucks Me In. His third book, Tuesday Takes Me There, again aimed at educating children about the disabled and service dogs, is scheduled to come out in June. The books relate Montalván’s personal journey with post-traumatic stress disorder, traumatic brain injury and severe physical injuries after numerous military tours in Iraq. His life was spiraling downhill, until he met Tuesday, a golden retriever service dog. Montalván’s says his dog saved his life.

Montalván and Tuesday will do two presentations in Durango at the Holiday Inn on U.S. Highway 160. An adult event, based on the book Until Tuesday will be held from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Friday. A presentation of Tuesday Tucks Me In, for families and children will be held from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday.

Additionally, Maria’s Bookshop will have Montalván’s books available for purchase at the event. Tuesday will be signing “pawtographs.”

Holiday DUI enforcement starts

The Colorado Department of Transportation, Colorado State Patrol and local law enforcement statewide are ready for the next The Heat Is On DUI enforcement period. DUI arrests traditionally rise during the holiday weekend and increased patrols are necessary to keep roads safe. The intensified patrols begin Friday and run until Tuesday.

According to CDOT, 61 percent of Memorial Day fatalities were alcohol related.

Checkpoint Colorado, a 100-day summer enforcement period, also begins Friday and runs through Labor Day weekend.
