FLC to hold panel on animals, humans
Fort Lewis College will present a panel of experts speaking on Animal Sentience and Human Interaction at 7 p.m. Oct. 7 in the Student Union Ballroom at Fort Lewis College.
The panel includes two veterinarians, an ethicist, a local meat producer and a specialist in equine-assisted learning.
The panel is a follow-up to an earlier visit by Dr. Temple Grandin, an internationally famous animal scientist who happens to be autistic. She was the featured guest author for the Fort Lewis College and Community Common Reading Experience. Her book, “Thinking in Pictures: My Life with Autism,” is the chosen book for the 2015 Community Common Reading Experience.

Life-Long Learning series continues
The Life-Long Learning Lecture Series at Fort Lewis College will present “Theatrically Speaking – The Fort Lewis College Fall Theatre Season” at 7 p.m. Thursday in Noble Hall, Room 130.
Professors Felicia Meyer and Dennis Elkins, both professional actors and directors, will discuss and provide an overview of the FLC fall theatre season. There are two performances, “A Girl’s Guide to Coffee” by FLC alumnus Eric Coble, and the Tony Award-winning “Spring Awakening, the Musical.” As a special feature, student performers will enact scenes from both plays.

FLC plans events for Homecoming
Fort Lewis College Homecoming Week will offer these events:

The annual Homecoming Bonfire and Fireworks Show will take place at 8 p.m. Friday at the FLC Softball Complex. Admission is free.

The FLC Homecoming Tailgate Party will begin at 11 a.m. Saturday in the Dennison Field parking lot. The FLC football team will play Western New Mexico at noon. FLC volleyball will play Colorado Christian at 5 p.m. in Whalen Gym.
The Skyhawk Sports Spectacular presented by FLC Athletics will take place Saturday. The Spectacular is a celebration of all things Skyhawk and a fundraiser for the sports programs. Live, silent and online auctions will feature items such as a fishing trip to Riversong Lodge in Alaska, apparel and more. Tickets are $30 and can be purchased online, along with bidding on auction items, at http://fortlewis.schoolauction.net/spectacular2015.
The FLC Athletics Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony will take place at 9 a.m. Sunday at the Strater Hotel, 699 Main Ave., and Skyhawk Women’s Soccer vs. UC-Colorado Springs will take place at 1 p.m. on Dirks Field.

Bikes, Bands, Brews to be held at Ska
The second annual Bikes, Bands and Brews fundraiser will be held from 2 to 6 p.m. Saturday at Ska Brewing, 225 Girard St.
Ska will release its Euphoria beer at this event and Steamworks also will provide beverages.
The “Tutus to Brews” bike parade from Carver Brewing Co., 1022 Main Ave., to Ska using the Animas River Trail will begin at noon at Carver’s. Tutus are encouraged.
Two bands will play during the event along with cycling events including cyclocross races, ghost ride and Huffy toss. Barbecue and beverages will be available for purchase. All proceeds will benefit the FLC Cycling team and the Durango Daybreak Rotary’s local humanitarian projects.
Retiring fire chief to be honored
The Durango Fire Protection District Board of Directors will host a celebration honoring Chief Dan Noonan and his 39 years of commitment to the fire service and the community at 2 p.m. Sunday at Ska, 225 Girard St.
A presentation will take place at 3:30 p.m.
