Well-known quilt designer to visit

An open house meet-and-greet for Jacqueline de Jonge will take place at 3 p.m. Sunday at the Durango Quilt Company, 21516 U.S. Highway 160.

De Jonge is an award-winning quilt designer from the Netherlands. She is recognized worldwide for her quilts, teaching and patience with her students. She will be in Durango to teach three two-day classes on “How to Make a BeColourful Quilt” from April 18 to 23.

Scoop the Poop Challenge Saturday

The second Scoop the Poop Challenge will meet from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday at the Horse Gulch trailhead.

The event will feature prizes, gifts and a raffle. Bags will be provided.

Buddhist retreat to host open house

Tara Mandala, a Buddhist retreat center located outside of Pagosa Springs,will host an open house Sunday.

Events will include an introduction to meditation with Lama Tsultrim Allione and a guided tour of the land and Buddhist temple. The tour will begin promptly at 10 a.m., finish at 1 p.m., and be followed by a vegetarian buffet lunch.

After lunch, Lama Tsultrim Allione will teach “Meditation 101” which will include time for a question-and-answer session. The Tara Mandala Store will be open. Participants should arrive by 9:30 a.m. Visitors must sign in at the office.

County commissioner to host office hours

La Plata County Commissioner Gwen Lachelt will hold office hours from noon to 2 p.m. Monday at the La Plata County Fairgrounds, in the Pine Room of the Extension Building, 2500 Main Ave.

Participants are invited to discuss issues of concern or interest, and share their opinions on county issues.

Mercy offers hospice volunteer training

Hospice of Mercy will offer a two-day volunteer training course for individuals interested in becoming a hospice volunteer.

The comprehensive course will take place from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. April 29 and April 30 at Florida Mesa Presbyterian Church, 1024 County Road 230.

Hospice of Mercy has been providing compassionate care in the community for more than 30 years. Space is limited.

Persons interested in attending the course should call Erica Kelly at 764-3536 by Monday.

Free storm-spotter training offered

Free Storm Spotter Training will be provided by the National Weather Service at 6 p.m. at these locations:

Tuesday at the La Plata County Fairgrounds in the Animas Room, 2500 Main Ave.Wednesday at the Archuleta County EOC Building, 777 County Road 600 in Pagosa Springs.April 21 at the Montezuma County Sheriff’s Office, 730 E. Driscoll St. in Cortez.Training includes the two-hour Basic Storm Spotter class. Optional advanced training will follow the basic training at Durango and Cortez.

DHS theater troupe to host fundraiser

Durango High School Troupe 1096 will host a benefit gala at 6:30 p.m. Friday in the cafeteria.

Money raised will help students who qualified compete at the National Thespian Festival in Lincoln, Nebraska, this summer. Mutu’s will provide appetizers, dinner and desserts. Participants will watch student performances and tech presentations. Individual tickets are $50, and the cost to reserve a table is $350 (tables seat 10).
