Paint Horse Club to host show

Mesa Verde Paint Horse Club will have an Open Western-English Show with an added Costume Class on Sunday at the La Plata County Fairgrounds, 2500 Main Ave.

Preregistration will open at 8 a.m., and the show will start at 9 a.m.

Garden Club of Durango to meet

The Garden Club of Durango will tour Willowtail Springs Nature Preserve and Research Center Wednesday in Mancos. Willowtail is a 60-acre preserve owned and operated by Peggy and Lee Cloy. To carpool, meet at the Santa Rita Gardens at noon.

Mancos library to screen film

Mancos Public Library, 211 W. First St., will present an advance screening of “MAKERS: Women in Comedy” at 6 p.m. Oct. 16.

Appetizers will be provided by the Millwood Junction Restaurant and refreshments will be served before the screening. A community discussion will follow the screening.

Women in Comedy is one of six episodes in the MAKERS series that profiles the impact women have had over the past 50 years in industries once largely closed to women.

AARP driver safety classes offered

A Smart Driver Safety class, defensive driving class sponsored by the AARP Driver Safety Program, will take place from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Oct. 18 in the Pine Room at the La Plata County Fairgrounds, 2500 Main Ave.

A class also will be available from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oct. 23 at the Cortez Senior Center, 107 N. Chestnut.

The class is a nationwide Department of Motor Vehicles accredited, defensive driving program that highlights recognizing and compensating for naturally occurring age-related changes. The certificate is good for three years. Auto insurance discounts apply for drivers age 55 and older for the three years. The cost for AARP members is $15 and $20 for nonmembers and includes all class materials and light refreshments.

Archaeologist to speak in Cortez

The slide presentation “Re-Excavating the Past: New Work with Ancient Textiles, Baskets, Wood, and Hides from Southeastern Utah” will take place at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 22 at the Cortez Cultural Center, 25 N. Market St.

Archaeologist Laurie Webster will lead the presentation. Webster will discuss her 2014 work and will show a slide presentation of some of these textiles, baskets, hides, feathers, wood and other perishable artifacts in these little-known collections and their journey from alcoves in Southeast Utah to the current museum repositories. The presentation is free to members of the center, and $5 per person for nonmembers.
