Healing Spirits hosts memorial walk

Healing Spirits, along with Shawmarie Tso, invite everyone to a memorial walk at 10 a.m. Saturday.

The walk in honor of Leah Violet Tsosie will be in the Three Springs area.

Participants can gather in the parking lot on the back side of the Mercy Medical Center – adjacent to the medical offices buildings. Look for balloons.

Shawmarie invites people to bring a photo of their loved ones who have died because of alcohol and drugs. She also requests walkers to wear lime green – Leah’s favorite color.

Leah Tsosie perished in a drunken driving car crash. She graduated from Durango High School in 2008 and was a member of the Navajo tribe. She was an employee of the Southern Ute Head Start at the time of her death.

Animas City Theater to screen film Sunday

A premiere screening of “The Look of Silence” by two-time Academy Award-nominated director John Oppenheimer will be shown from 4:30 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Animas City Theatre, 128 E. College Drive.

The film covers the 1965-66 Indonesian killings. Doors open at 4:30 p.m. for food and cash bar; film screening at 5 p.m., with discussion afterward.

A suggested donation for tickets is $25. Tickets are available at Animas City Theatre or by calling 903-0957.

Crisis intervention officers recognized

Crisis Intervention Team of Southwest Colorado is a regional initiative designed to improve the way law enforcement and the community respond to people experiencing a behavioral health crisis.

The program fosters strong collaboration between law enforcement, behavioral health providers and individuals and families in our communities. The program annually recognizes outstanding Crisis Intervention Team officers with the CIT Officer of the Year award. Recipients of the 2016 award are La Plata County Sheriff’s Office deputies Dean Brown and Derick Campbell, the Bayfield Marshal’s Office, and Durango Police Department Sgt. David Longenette.

The awards honor officers and organizations for contributions at the annual Crisis Intervention Team training.

Tax-limiting law explained in Bayfield

Carol Hedges, executive director of the Colorado Fiscal Institute, will explain the Colorado Taxpayer’s Bill of Rights at 5 p.m. Thursday at the Pine River Public Library, 395 Bayfield Center Drive, Bayfield.

Rotary club recognizes its officer of the year

Durango High Noon Rotary Club meets from 11:45 a.m. to 1 p.m. each Thursday at the DoubleTree Hotel, 501 Camino del Rio. This week, the club will honor the memory of Colorado State Patrol Trooper Taylor Thyfault, who was killed in the line of duty in May 2015. Thyfault was a cadet in training at the time of his death, and was to be assigned to CSP Troop 5A in Durango. The club will posthumously award Thyfault the Mark H. Dold Memorial Trooper of the Year Award. The cost for lunch is $15.
