Durango’s bears to be discussed

“Durango’s Bears,” a free talk, will take place from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today in Noble Hall, Room 130, Fort Lewis College.

The La Plata County Living with Wildlife Advisory Board and Life-Long Learning will present Heather Johnson of Colorado Parks and Wildlife Department. Johnson will speak about a five-year study of black bear interaction with urban environments.

The study, now in its third year, looks at management strategies to reduce bear-human conflicts and assesses the role of human development on bear behavior and population dynamics.

Boys, Girls Club to host event

The Boys & Girls Club of La Plata County will celebrate its 7th birthday with its annual Birthday Bash event from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Friday at the DoubleTree Hotel, 501 Camino del Rio.

There will be food, photo booth, a costume contest, wine toss, cupcake auction and other activities. Tickets are $40 for a couple or $25 each.

For more information, call 375-0010.

‘Olga Little’ to be discussed

The Durango Heritage Celebration will feature a free presentation by “Olga Little” at 1 p.m. Friday at the Animas Museum, 3065 West Second Ave.

Believed to be the only lady “jack packer” in the annals of the American West, Little packed supplies into and ores out of the mines in the La Plata Mountains. She endured harsh conditions in rugged mountain terrain, and took risks that some veteran men packers were reluctant to take.

The program will be available for viewing after the presentation.

For more information, call 259-2402.
