QuickBooks class will give you a start
Southwest Colorado Small Business Development Center and First National Bank of Durango will sponsor an “Introduction to QuickBooks Workshop” from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday at the First National Bank Training Room, 259 W. Ninth St.
This workshop will be taught by certified QuickBooks pro-adviser Bethany McManus. Topics will include: how to get through the set-up process, creating an effective chart of accounts, Small Business Accounting 101, strategies for managing cash flow, how to make bill paying less painful, strategies for getting paid faster and more.
There will be a lunch break from noon to 1 p.m. Participants are asked to bring a brown bag lunch.
The cost is $70 or $65 for Chamber of Commerce members.

Iron Horse party to kick off weekend
Steamworks Brewing Co. and Ska Brewing Co. will host the kickoff party for the 44th Iron Horse Bicycle Classic from 3 to 9 p.m. Friday in Buckley Park.
The event beer, “Face Plant,” will be tapped, and there will be live performances by DJ Codestar and Carrie Nation and the Speakeasy.
An unofficial bike rally from Ska to Durango Cyclery will depart at 4:20 p.m. Friday from Ska World Headquarters, 225 Girard St. in Bodo Industrial Park. This event will feature bike games and the drawing for a Yeti cycle.
The pro-class mountain bike race will pass through Steamworks on May 24, and a trials demonstration will take place in the Steamworks parking lot, 801 East Second Ave.
Ska and Steamworks also will host a joint beer garden in the Steamworks parking lot from noon to 5 p.m. May 24.

Free class will build your relationship skills
Chrysalis Counseling and Michael Wilkinson will present a free class on relationship skill-building from 1 to 4 p.m. May 23 at the Mason Center, 301 E. 12th St., Room 1.
Participants will learn about communication, conflict management, forgiveness and intimacy.

Music, rafting, more at Dolores festival
The Dolores River Festival will begin at 10 a.m. June 6 in Joe Rowell Park in Dolores.
The cost is $20. Children 12 and younger are free. The event will feature children’s activities, river-raft parade, river-raft rides, dog-fetch contest and vendors with food and drink.
Music will include the Pimps of Joytime from Brooklyn, Cold River City, The Porter Draw, Carute Roma, Afrobeatniks, The Crags, Liver by the River, Sweetwater Station and the Herb Folsom Band.

You can help fight maternal mental illness
The Climb Out of the Darkness event will be held at 10 a.m. June 14 on the Animas Mountain Trail.
The event raises awareness of maternal mental illnesses such as postpartum depression, anxiety, psychosis and obsessive compulsive disorder.
As part of the Climb, survivors will raise money for Postpartum Progress, a nonprofit organization and online community of support resources for women around the world.
Money raised from this event will allow the organization to create new educational materials to be used by obstetricians, pediatricians and others, as well as new materials to help educate the media about the public health impact of postpartum depression and related illnesses on mothers and children.
