Rotary Club looks at Ecuador trip

John Bregar will present on his trips in Ecuador to the Rotary Club of Durango at 6 p.m. today at the Strater Hotel, 699 Main Ave.

Bregar will display pictures of the cities he visited and climbing expeditions on Ecuador’s largest volcanic mountains that are covered with snow and ice. A retired geologist and geophysicist, Bregar has led hiking and mountain-climbing, wildflower and birding trips for many years with Durango-area nonprofits. Visitors are welcome.

Christmas tree permits available

Christmas tree permits, which allow people to cut their own holiday tree on National Forest and Bureau of Land Management lands, are on sale at these locations:

Bayfield: Columbine Ranger District, 367 Pearl St.

Cortez: City Market, 508 E. Main St.

Dolores: Dolores Public Lands Office, 29211 Colorado Highway 184; and Dolores Food Market, 400 Railroad Ave.

Durango: San Juan Public Lands Center, 15 Burnett Court; and Kroeger’s Ace Hardware, No. 8 Town Plaza.

Mancos: Cox Conoco, 201 E. Railroad Ave.

Pagosa Springs: Pagosa Ranger District, 180 Pagosa St.

A permit, which costs $8, allows people to cut one tree up to 20-feet tall for personal use. This year’s permits expire Dec. 31. Permits come with a brochure explaining regulations and tips.

National Forest/BLM offices also sell maps and offer tips on tree harvesting. Offices in Bayfield, Dolores, Durango and Pagosa Springs will be open from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday to Friday through the holidays.

Beginning Spanish group forming

A new, small group that will learn beginning-level Spanish will meet from 10 to 11 a.m. starting Wednesday.

The Durango Parkinson’s Disease Education Group will meet from 1 to 2 p.m. Thursday at the First United Methodist Church, 2917 Aspen Drive.

Kiwanis Club focus on Child ID

The Kiwanis Club of Durango will meet at noon Thursday at the Durango Community Recreation Center, 2700 Main Ave.

Steve Schlageter, Kiwanis member and founder of Child ID, will talk about this Kiwanis program and its impact on the community. More than 2,000 children in the community have had their fingerprints and picture recorded and placed in the Child ID kit. The public is invited.

AARP group to meet today

The AARP Durango Chapter No. 1243 will meet at 10 a.m. today at the Durango/La Plata Senior Center, 2424 Main Ave.

Officers will be elected for 2015 and all members are encouraged to attend. An update on Medicare Part D and related senior programs will be discussed.

To eat at the senior center, make lunch reservations by calling 382-6445 by 9:30 a.m. that day.
