Historical information sought for project

Historical information about the Animas City/ Silverton Toll Road (established 1876), the historic village of Rockwood and the Rockwood Cemetery is needed for a research project.

Information from descendants of La Plata County pioneer families is particularly desired.

Rite Aid to host wellness event

Rite Aid, 28 Town Plaza, will host a Wellness 65-plus event from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday.

The topic will be “Healthy Heart and Cholesterol.” There will be free grab bags, snacks and refreshments available. There will be a pharmacist on site for people who have questions regarding their medical issues. Blood pressure readings and medication overviews also will be available to people who wish to take advantage of the on-site wellness team.

Referrals sought for housing program

The State Housing Voucher program, an initiative between the Division of Housing and the Office of Behavioral Health, to serve homeless people with mental illness and people leaving state institutes, is seeking referrals.

The program provides rental assistance for hard-to-serve homeless persons or people in jeopardy of becoming homeless. The program is designed to provide housing and supportive services on a long-term basis for homeless people, or people in jeopardy of becoming homeless with mental illness.

One hundred vouchers are available on a firstcome, first-served basis.

These people are eligible for the program: individuals exiting Fort Logan or the Community Mental Health Institute in Pueblo; homeless individuals with mental illness who meet these definitions; people who resided in a shelter or place not meant for human habitation and who are exiting an institution where he or she temporarily resided; people who are losing their housing in 14 days and lack support networks or resources to obtain housing; people who have moved from place to place and are likely to continue to do so because of disability or other barriers; and people who are victims of domestic violence and sexual assault.

Forest Service to burn slash piles

The Dolores Ranger District plans to burn slash piles left over from fuels reduction projects beginning today on the San Juan National Forest.

Firefighters will ignite about 300 piles off Forest Service Road No. 559 about seven miles north of Mancos in the Millwood area and about 30 piles off Forest Service Road No. 504 east of Dove Creek in the Doe Canyon area. Operations will continue through the week, weather permitting, from mid-mornings to mid-afternoons for optimum smoke dispersal. No road or trail closures are expected.
