Join the Elks for a traditional Irish dinner

Durango Elks Lodge No. 507 will serve traditional Irish meals on Thursday: Lunch will be served from noon to 2 p.m., dinner from 5 to 7 p.m.

These events are open to the public. The proceeds will help Durango Elks to continue to support the community through the many youth, veteran and family programs provided throughout the year. Guests should enter by the East Second Avenue entrance at 901 East Second Ave.

Costs are $10 for adults and $6 for kids 10 and younger.

Learn about South Pole explorers

The Life-Long Learning Lecture Series at Fort Lewis College will host the free presentation, “The Trouble with Fame: The Story of Scott, Amundsen and the South Pole,” at 7 p.m. Thursday in Room 130, Noble Hall at FLC.

The presenter, Dr. Gordon Thomas, will discuss the famous South Pole expeditions and why Roald Amundsen’s leadership skills were the same that kept him from being a skillful publicist.

Training talks offered for Iron Horse ride

“How to ride a successful Iron Horse,” free training talks geared toward women offered by Marisa Asplund and Cindy Schmidt, will take place from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Tuesday and on April 19 at the Durango Public Library, 1900 East Third Avenue.

The talk on Tuesday with Asplund will focus on creating a training program for a busy lifestyle, essential components for training, ideal training routes and nutritional tips and tools.

The talk by Cindy Schmidt on April 19 will focus on injury prevention, recovery strategies and mindful training – balancing a busy lifestyle with healthful training. Asplund and Schmidt will be available at both talks for questions.

Botanical Society to offer workshops

Guest instructor Lisa Coddington from Santa Fe will conduct two workshops: A two-day workshop Friday and Saturday, “Living Lines in Spring,” and a half-day workshop Sunday, “Sumptuous Succulents.”

Coddington was an instructor for the American Society of Botanical Artists and has been teaching for more than 15 years.

Kathy Whitson will conduct a one-day workshop “Zen Doodles” on April 2. She incorporates doodling with watercolor, bookbinding and art and nature journaling.

Tobey Ellis offers a six-week course, “Bird and Bird Habitats,” from April 13 through May 8. This class will also include bugs and bug habitat.
