Planning Commission to host public hearing

The La Plata County Planning Commission will hold a public hearing on the adoption of regulations governing the construction of telecommunication facilities at 6 p.m. Thursday in the meeting room at La Plata County Courthouse, 1060 East Second Ave.

Interested members of the public are encouraged to attend.

Durango library to host book sale

A book sale will take place from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday at Durango Public Library, 1900 East Third Ave.

All books will be a $1 a pound. Mystery bags will be available for $2. A “Friends” bag will be available for purchase and can be filled with select books for $5.

Author Greg Walcher to speak Saturday

Southwest Colorado Republicans will host author Greg Walcher who will talk about his book Smoking Them Out: The Theft of the Environment and How to Take It Back at 4:30 p.m. Saturday in Durango Joe’s meeting room, 732 East College Drive.

Walcher will speak and sign his book. Walcher, raised in western Colorado, is a nationally known leader in natural-resources policy. Smoking Them Out provides practical strategies and approaches for taking action now. Walcher explains in clear terms how leaders can recapture the high ground from the command and control of government and its allies – the gigantic environmental industry whose reliance on legislation and litigation has inflicted pain on the economy and environment. Donations to cover expenses will be accepted.

Native cuisine expo to be held in Ignacio

In celebration of Native American Heritage Month, the Southern Ute Cultural Center and Museum, 77 County Road 517 in Ignacio, will host the third annual Native Cuisine and Food Expo from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.

Chefs Karlos Baca and Anthony Hamlin will prepare a menu of gourmet food with locally sourced ingredients, including buffalo and elk. Apache Crown Dancers, Ute Powwow dancers and a Navajo rock band will perform. Tickets are $20 for adults and $10 for children ages 7-15. Only 200 tickets will be sold.

Community Center to hold art, craft fair

TARA (Tiffany, Allison, Rosa, Arboles) Community Center will host its first Holiday Art and Craft Fair from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at 333 Milton Lane in Arboles.

To get to the community center, travel Colorado Highway 151 to Arboles and turn on County Road 982 toward Navajo Lake State Park, then left on Milton Lane at the fire station. The center is one block on the left.

Gift show and sale to take place Saturday

The 16th annual Holiday Gift Show and Sale will take place from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday in the Oak Room of the Strater Hotel, 699 Main Ave.

The show will feature pottery, mixed metal jewelry, mosaics, gourd art, natural soaps and holiday decor, metal art, fabric bowls and fine chocolates, jams and jellies, and specialty mustards.

Craft fair to take place at Ignacio High School

Ignacio Schools Relay for Life teams will host a “Curing Cancer with Crafts craft fair from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday Nov. 16 at Ignacio High School, 315 Ignacio St., in Ignacio.

The fair will feature a Navajo taco and bake sale as well. The teams will participate in the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life on June 27 and 28.
