Mud run raising money for kids' programs
The third annual Muck and Mire Adventure Race will be held on Aug. 9 at Durango Mountain Resort.
The event is sponsored by First National Bank of Durango and includes a fundraiser for food assistance programs for local kids. Those include the kids' backpack program in Bayfield, the Ignacio snack program, and the Manna Soup Kitchen kids' backpack program.
The backpack programs provide non-perishable snacks and foods needing minimal preparation for kids in homes where food security is an issue, during the summer and on weekends during the school year.
The Muck and Mire Race will include a 5K run for families and recreational runners, a 10K run for more serious competitors, and the Backcountry Experience Fun Run for Kids. All proceeds from the Fun Run for Kids will go to the food assistance programs. The event includes the Steamworks beer garden and live music by Bacon.

During July and August, all five First National Bank offices in Durango and Bayfield are taking donations of non-perishable food items, new or gently-used backpacks, and cash donations for Food for La Plata Kids. Other drop-off locations are the DMR ticket office at #1 Skier Place or the DMR office at 327 S. Camino del Rio in Bodo Business Park.

Wrestling Association holding dance tomorrow
The Ignacio Wrestling Association will host a dance from 6 p.m. to 1 a.m. Saturday, July 26 at Spring Creek Hall. Proceeds will help wrestlers with gear and summer camp fees.
Flatwater, Carbon Red and Wild Country will perform. Tickets are $12 per person.

Library celebrating Harry Potter birthday
The Pine River Library is celebrating Harry Potter's birthday this year with a special "Potter Party" event. Starting at 11 a.m. on Thursday, July 31, the library will show the last two films in the "Harry Potter" series. Free snacks will be provided, or attendees are welcome to bring their own.
According to the books, Harry's birthday is July 31, 1980, which would make him 34 years old this year.
All movies are free at the Pine River Library.

Head Start enrolling for 2014-2015
Southern Ute Montessori Head Start (HS) and Early Head Start (EHS) are currently enrolling for the 2014-2015 school year. Head Start serves children 3 to 5 years old, and Early Head Start serves children 6 weeks to 3 years old, including children with special needs. Services are free of charge, regardless of income, for all qualifying families. All ethnicities are welcome.
Qualifying families must live within the exterior boundaries of the Southern Ute Indian Reservation and the Ignacio School District, or in the following section of Bayfield: south of Highway 160 between CR 509 and CR 526/523. Ignacio Middle School offering sport physicals next Friday
Athletic physicals will be offered from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. Friday, Aug. 1 at Ignacio Middle School. The exam is good for next year's middle school and high school athletes in the 2014-2015 sports seasons. The cost is $30.

SUCAP holding public hearing on senior programs
Southern Ute Community Action Programs has applied for $6,300 in grant funding for its senior citizens and low-income assistance programs.
A public hearing will be at 11:45 a.m. Tuesday, July 29, at the Ignacio Senior Center, 15345 Highway 172. Copies of the application are available for public reading at the Ignacio Senior Center, SUCAP Central Administration and Ignacio Public Library.

Kids' programs focus on sun, wildlife at Navajo State Park this weekend
It's all about kids and fun at Navajo State Park this Saturday and Sunday. Two educational sessions will feature use of art and science to teach kids about the natural world.
"Printmaking in the sun" will be held at 9 a.m. Saturday at the Rosa campground building. Youngsters will learn that besides providing warmth, the sun's light also creates chemical changes on earth. Solar print-making uses photosensitive paper coated with a chemical that changes color when it's exposed to certain wavelengths in sunlight. After a short walk to gather plant materials, kids will get to create their own artist images. Kids will be working with water and other media.
"Animal tracks" is at 9 a.m. Sunday at the Rosa campground building. Kids will first learn about tracks, scat, furs and skulls, and how to identify animals from those clues. They'll then use animal track imprints to make their own artwork using the direct ink printing.

Community funding applications in Bayfield due Aug. 15
The Town of Bayfield provides community support funding to local non-profit agencies every year. Applications for community support funding for 2015 are now being accepted. The application deadline is Friday, Aug. 15. In order to be eligible to apply, the local organization must be a certified non-profit in good standing and provide services to town residents. Southern Ute Musuem hosting "Hunger Games"
The Southern Ute Cultural Center and Museum welcomes all youth to the "Ute Hunger Games" Aug. 4-8. Participants will learn Ute survival skills about shelter, weaponry, food and fire. The morning session from 9:30 a.m. to noon is for children ages 7 to 9, the afternoon session from 1 to 3:30 p.m. is for youth 10 to 13. The cost is $120, and registrations are due Aug. 1.
