Discuss your concerns with Gwen Lachelt

La Plata County Commissioner Gwen Lachelt will hold office hours from noon to 2 p.m. Monday at the La Plata County Fairgrounds in the Animas Room of the Extension Building, 2500 Main Ave.

Participants are encouraged to come and discuss issues of concern or interest and share their opinions on county issues.

Come see ‘All Friars Are Not Equal’ speech

Center of Southwest Studies at Fort Lewis College will host a presentation by the center’s director, Jay Harrison, at 6 p.m. Monday in the Lyceum Room.

Harrison’s presentation is titled “All Friars Are Not Equal: Understanding Franciscan Missionaries in the Early Southwest.” Drawing on his research, Harrison will address the many approaches and backgrounds of the Franciscans and other colonial Spanish churchmen who established missions in New Mexico; Texas; Sonora, California; and other locations in between. A question-and-answer session will follow.

Club Venture to host Ignacio bike clinic

The Ignacio Community Library, 470 Goddard Ave., will offer bike maintenance with Club Venture in a two-part series to take place Monday and April 27.

Participants should bring their bike in for spring maintenance and learn simple repairs.

It’s weed-spraying season in our parks

The city of Durango Parks and Recreation Department will commence spraying these areas:

Fassbinder, Viles, Roosa, Triangle and Crestview Parks on Tuesday.

Rank Park, Chapman Hill and the Rio Vista area of Memorial Park on Wednesday.

Hillcrest View and Jenkins Ranch parks Thursday.

Durango Community Recreation Center on April 24.

The city has contracted with Scott’s Pro-Lawn for turf fertilization and noxious weed abatement. The herbicide that will be used is called Vessel Broadleaf Herbicide.

‘Mind your Body’ film Tuesday at library

The documentary “The Connection: Mind Your Body” will be screened from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Durango Public Library, 1900 East Third Ave.

The Connection is a feature documentary revealing the research by world-leading experts in mind-body medicine and six true stories of recovery. The post-screening panel will point to community resources available for learning and engaging in mind-body practices.

Volunteers needed for kids water festival

The 20th annual Children’s Water Festival will be held May 6 at Fort Lewis College.

About 30 guides are needed to lead more than 700 regional fifth-grade students and their classes to various water-related stations on campus. Volunteers will receive a continental breakfast, T-shirt, lunch, water bottle and bag. The festival qualifies for seven hours of community service. Guides will need to meet at 7:30 a.m. at the FLC Student Union Ballroom and will be finished between 2 and 3 p.m.

Learn ‘How to get a $1.20 out of a $1’

A discussion titled “How to get a $1.20 out of a $1” will take place at 5:30 p.m. Thursday at the Ignacio Community Library, 470 Goddard Ave.

People will learn tips on how they can save a little money every day on things they do. The presenter of the class will be Wendy Rice of the La Plata County Extension Office. Participants will receive a free piggy bank.

This class is for families and individuals. A light meal will be served before the event, and a children’s area will be set up.
