The Durango Elks Lodge Veterans Committee will serve breakfast from 9 to 11 a.m. the first and third Sundays of the month at the Durango Elks Lodge, 901 East Second Ave.
Participants should use the lodge’s Ninth Street entrance.
The cost is $5 for veterans and $6 for non-veterans.
Animas Valley Grange, 7271 County Road 203, will present “Pest and Disease Control on Fruit Trees” at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday.
Darrin Parmenter will present a talk on ways to prevent and control some of the common pests and diseases of fruit trees in La Plata County.
He will emphasize methods that do not rely on harsh chemicals.
Parmenter is the La Plata County director of the Colorado State University Extension Office. Refreshments will be served.

This event is open to the public and will feature live music from Bob’s Yr Uncle, food, drink, a plein air art show and silent auction to benefit the society’s work creating and maintaining public gardens in the Southwest.

FireWise of Southwest Colorado is offering a Chipper Rental Rebate Program for residents who need to reduce the slash from wildfire fuels mitigation on private lands.
The program, which began April 1, is open to all residents in Montezuma, Dolores, La Plata, San Juan and Archuleta counties.
The program will reimburse residents the lesser of either $100 per day or 50 percent of the chipper rental cost or mitigation contractor cost.
Rebates are also available to homeowner associations that sponsor a chipping day. The program will run until Oct. 30.

The eighth and final session of the Great Decisions discussion series will be held from 11:45 a.m. to 1:45 p.m. Tuesday at the Durango Public Library, 1900 East Third Ave.
Participants are invited to bring a sack lunch. The subject of this discussion will be “Cuba and the United States.” Ross and Ellen Park will lead the discussion.
In 2015, the Parks joined a People-to-People tour of Cuba and spent two weeks traveling around the Caribbean island.
