Bare fruit trees to reduce bear conflicts

Bear Smart Durango is urging residents to use excess fruit instead of leaving it on or under trees. Although household trash is the primary source of local bear/human conflicts, unused ripened fruit is another.

Extra fruit can be used for livestock feed, human consumption and composting. An additional benefit of using all available fruit is a reduced likelihood of tree damage by bears.

To access the Fruit Gleaning Hub, which helps residents find businesses and individuals seeking excess fruit, visit http://fruitglean.org.
