Wordpress basics class to be held in Bayfield

The Pine River Library, 395 Bayfield Center Drive in Bayfield, will offer a free two-part “Wordpress Basics” class from 6 to 8 p.m. June 18 and 20. Attendance at both classes is required. Participants should have basic knowledge of computers. Also, attendees will need a domain name and hosting account setup with the domain name in order to install Wordpress. Free Zumbatomic classes to be offered

Children ages 5 to 12 are invited to a free Zumbatomic demonstration class Tuesday at the Durango Community Recreation Center’s outdoor rock amphitheater, 2700 Main Ave.

Zumbatomic is the kid-friendly version of Zumba Fitness for adults. The class combines dance routines, Spanish vocabulary, multicultural music history, creative expression and nutrition education. These four repeat demonstrations will take place: 9 to 9:30 a.m. or 9:30 to 10 a.m. for children ages 5 to 7; and 10 to 10:30 a.m. or 10:30 to 11 a.m. for children ages 8 to 12. No dance experience is necessary.

Easements, parks to be sprayed

The city of Durango Parks and Recreation Department will spray these areas from Monday to Saturday: The city easement below the Durango Outdoor Gun Club on La Posta Road; the Durango Police Substation in Three Springs, and the Animas River Trail system right-of-way; the city easement at 605 Clovis Drive; the volleyball courts at Santa Rita Park; Crestview Park; the East Animas View Drive cul-de-sac; the city lot at the corner of 31st Street and Holly Avenue; and the medians on Bodo Drive and the frontage road by the Colorado Department of Transportation. The herbicides that will be used are Milestone and Roundup-Rifle D-2-4-D.

Volunteers sought to restore labyrinth

Durango’s Original Labyrinth seeks volunteers to help restore it at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

This 11 Circuit Labyrinth is the same as the one on the floor of Chartres Cathedral in France built in the 1400s during the Renaissance Era. The labyrinth was built by Susan Urban and friends in 1991. The goal is to restore it before a walk to be held June 22. A gas-powered weed eater is needed.

Individual times also can be scheduled. Participants are asked to bring a large and special rock to redefine the pathway.

Library to host Mexico, Guatemala series

The Pine River Library, 395 Bayfield Center Drive in Bayfield, will offer “Guatemala and Mexico: Highlights of the Old and New,” an eight-part series, at 7 p.m. Mondays from June 17 to Aug. 5. Mark Curran, retired professor of Spanish and Portuguese at Arizona State University, will lead the series. Each class will begin with an introduction to the topic, followed by slides and a time for questions or discussion.

The series will include: An introduction to the series, Mexico City and the National Museum of Anthropology and History on June 17; the Ancient Mayas, Tikal in Guatemala and Copán in Honduras on June 24; Antigua, Lake Atitlán and Chichicastenango in Guatemala on July 1; Las Ventas and Teotihuacán in Mexico on July 8; San Cristóbal de las Casas, Água Azul and Palenque in Mexico on July 15; Uxmal and Chichén-Itzá in Mexico on July 22; Tourism in Cancún and Tulúm in Mexico on July 29; and Spanish songs and social hour Aug. 5

Blue Lake Ranch to host Iris Festival

Blue Lake Ranch will host its 20th annual Iris Festival and Bedding Plant Sale from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. June 15 and 16 at the ranch at 16 mile marker on Colorado Highway 140 in Hesperus. The sale will feature iris, lilies and bedding plants.

Silverton to host cemetery work day

The 20th annual Silverton Hillside Cemetery volunteer work day will be held from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday.

Participants should bring limb loppers, hand-held clippers and shovels. After the work session, anecdotes of early pioneers for the 13 tombstones placed that day in the cemetery, will be shared. Bring a sack lunch and a lawn chair.
