LPEA warns customers about phone scam

La Plata Electric Association is warning its members about an impersonator claiming to be from LPEA and threatening disconnection for lack of payment.

“We’ve been alerted by several businesses that they’ve received phone calls, supposedly from LPEA’s ‘Billing Department,’ that their account is past due and that a serviceman is on the way to disconnect the electricity unless they pay immediately,” said Dennis Svanes of LPEA in a news release. “This is a scam. Do not give any credit card information over the phone.”

In compliance with regulations, LPEA’s customer service representatives do not accept credit card payments over the phone. If a member calls to pay by credit card, the member is directed to a secure, automated voice system.

When an account is past due, customers get a series of notices and are given adequate time to settle bills before service is disconnected.

If in doubt about a supposed billing department phone call from LPEA or authorized agent, customers are asked to end the conversation and call the LPEA Customer Service Department at 247-5786 or (888) 839-5732.

If the call is blatantly fraudulent, members should also call the local authorities.
