Durango Nature Studies to host full-moon hike

Durango Nature Studies will host a full-moon hike under the Corn Moon from 7 to 9 p.m. today at the Animas Overlook Trail.

The hike is free for members, and $10 for nonmembers. Participants will learn natural history, nocturnal animals, local landforms and cool moon facts and legends.

Durango garden club to meet Wednesday

The Garden Club of Durango will meet Wednesday.

Members will tour two very different gardens. The first will spotlight Bill and Kim Fisher’s collection of more than 100 varieties of dahlias. The group then will visit Jeff Wagner and Lisa Hollenbeck, owners of Four Corner Native Plants, featuring succulent and perennial cacti gardens.

AARP driver safety class available on Wednesday

A Smart Driver Safety class, defensive-driving class sponsored by the AARP Driver Safety Program, will take place from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Wednesday in the Pine Room at the La Plata County Fairgrounds, 2500 Main Ave.

The class is a nationwide Department of Motor Vehicles accredited, defensive-driving program that highlights recognizing and compensating for naturally occurring age-related changes. The certificate is good for three years. Auto-insurance discounts apply for drivers age 55 and older for three years. The cost for AARP members is $15, $20 for nonmembers and includes all class materials and light refreshments.

Workforce board to meet Wednesday

The Southwest Colorado Workforce Board will meet from 10:30 a.m. to noon Wednesday at the Cortez Workforce Center, 2208 E. Main St. in Cortez.

Agenda items will include regular Workforce Board business.

Radon informational class to be held

A radon informational class will be held from noon to 1 p.m. Thursday in the Florida Room at the La Plata County Fairgrounds Extension Building, 2500 Main Ave.

Participants will learn what radon is, why to care and what to do with the information after a home has been tested.

There is a $5 charge.

A limited number of long-term and short-term test kits will be available free of charge for people taking the class.

Run to raise awareness of sexual assault

Fort Lewis College will host a Light Up the Night 5K Run, 3K Walk to raise awareness of sexual assault.

The event will take place at 7:30 p.m. Friday at the FLC Clock Tower. The community is invited. Light Up the Night is free for anyone with an FLC ID or $10 without ID. The event is a partnership between FLC’s Housing staff from Animas Hall, Sexual Assault Services Organization of Durango and FLC’s Wellness Peer Advisory Council. At the event, students will learn ways to prevent sexual assault and be encouraged to report an assault if it does happen. They will learn what resources are available to support them, on and off campus.
