The La Plata County Humane Society received 35,000 pounds of natural Blue Buffalo dog/puppy and cat/kitten food from Best Friends Animal Society on Wednesday.
The delivery, which amounted to 30 pallets, was unloaded with the help of numerous volunteers. The donated food will save the Humane Society thousands of dollars this year. The Humane Society will also share the food with other local animal-rescue programs and shelters.
Best Friends Animal Society has a waiting list of animal shelters that have requested similar pet food donations. Best Friends runs the nation’s largest no-kill sanctuary for companion animals in Kanab, Utah.
By partnering with rescue groups and shelters nationwide since 1984, Best Friends has helped reduce the number of animals killed in American shelters from 17 million to 4 million annually.
