Men Who Grill event needs volunteers

The Women’s Resource Center seeks volunteers for its annual Men Who Grill fundraiser from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. June 11 at Buckley Park.

Volunteers are needed for various shifts beginning with setup at 8:30 a.m. Volunteer shifts run from one to three hours and include free entry into the event.

Also, grill team applications will be taken up until June 6.

Tickets are $20 in advance, $25 at the door. Children ages 5-12 are $10, under 5 are free. Tickets are on sale at Maria’s Bookshop, Backcountry Experience and the Women’s Resource Center.

Westendorff to meet with public in Bayfield

La Plata County Commissioner Julie Westendorff will hold office hours for the general public to meet with her from 10 a.m. to noon Thursday at the Pine River Library Conference Room, 395 Bayfield Center Drive, Bayfield.

Westendorff will meet with Bayfield-area residents about their interests and concerns.

Commissioners to consider letter to EPA

The La Plata County Board of Commissioners will consider at a special business meeting at 8:15 a.m. Wednesday a letter of comment to the Environmental Protection Agency regarding the agency’s proposed listing of the Bonita Peak Mining District as a Superfund site.

Commissioners will take public comment on the letter before taking action on it.

The meeting will be held in the County Administration Building board room, 1101 East Second Ave.

Bountiful Baskets program now available

Bountiful Baskets is a fruit and vegetable buying co-op whereby participants pool their money to get best-quality fresh produce at a wholesale price.

The program functions as a result of volunteers.

For a $15 contribution plus $3.50 for transport, participants get a substantial variety of fruits and vegetables every two weeks.

The selection changes each time, but generally includes seasonal produce such as bananas, romaine, berries, etc.

Participants can upgrade to a 100 percent organic selection for an additional $10.

The next time baskets will be available in Durango is Saturday. Pickup time is 11:15 a.m. at the La Plata County Fairgrounds Extension building. Volunteer time is at 10:15 a.m.

Animas River water quality on agenda

The Animas Watershed Partnership will host its spring forum to discuss improving water quality in the Animas River from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the Durango Public Library, 1900 East Third Ave.

Benjamin Nance and Dr. Steven Fenster of the Fort Lewis College biology department will present “Study of Potentially Pathogenic E. Coli Bacteria Found in the Animas River: An Update.”

AWP will also present the “Levels of E. coli and Nutrients Measured in the Lower Florida and Animas Rivers in 2014 and 2015.”

Program on Colorado Care is Thursday

National Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors Southwestern Colorado will meet from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. Thursday in the conference room at First National Bank, 259 W. Ninth St.

The topic will be ColoradoCare/Amendment 69. This measure will appear on the 2016 General Election ballot. It is a single-payer health care initiative whereby large tax increases would fund a government-run health care system.

The speaker will be Matt Sarchet of Warner Pacific Insurance. He has 10 years experience in health care insurance.

This is a free meeting for NAIFA members and non-member agents, advisers or brokers. One continuing credit will also be offered.
