Seed Studio to offer children’s classes

Seed Studio, located in Room 114 of the Smiley Building, 1309 East Third Ave., has announced several children’s courses and workshops for 2016-2017:

Seedlings is a pre-kindergarten enrichment program running from 9 a.m. to noon each Tuesday and Thursday from Sept. 6 through Dec. 15. It is for 4- and 5-year-olds only. It cultivates creative expression through art, yoga and play. Tuition is $240 per month.Art for Entrepreneurs is offered from 3:15 to 5:15 p.m. each Wednesday from Sept. 7 through Oct. 25. Children ages 6 to 12 will explore the entrepreneurial aspects of art using a variety of mediums to create a product, explore how business plans are made and sell the finished product. Students will donate profits to a local charity of choice. Tuition is $180.When school’s out, Seed is in! From teacher workdays to holiday breaks, if kids are out of school, Seed is in the studio. This workshop is held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Durango School District 9-R teacher workdays and the first Monday of holiday breaks. It is intended for children from 6 to 12, and it is structured like a typical day of summer camp at the studio, during which the group meditates, plays and creates. Each child will take home a piece of art. The fee is $80 per day.Lotus Girls is a workshop for girls ages from 8 to 12. It runs from 3:15 to 5:15 p.m. each Thursday from Nov. 10 through Dec. 15. The course will explore what it means to be a girl. Yoga and meditation will be used. Also, creative expression will be shared through a variety of mediums. Tuition is $113.

Cmdr. John B. Herrington, the first indigenous (Chickasaw) astronaut, will present on the importance of science, technology, engineering and math education. Grammy Award-nominated R. Carlos Nakai Quartet will hold an evening performance, and local bluegrass and folk bands will play from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The Canyon Country Discovery Center is a new science and nature center with indoor and outdoor learning stations.

Developed for culturally diverse audiences, the campus allows children and adults to explore and discover the natural history, peoples, land use, energy, astronomy, water and climate of the Colorado Plateau.
