Geology students to talk at gem club

Four Fort Lewis College geology students, who are scholarship recipients sponsored by the Four Corners Gem and Mineral Club, will present their research about local geology from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Monday at the club.

Presenters will be Adam Parker, Jake Lybrook, Anastasia Hedrick and Ethan Coppage.

The club is in Brookside Park (across from Durango High School) in the 2300 block of Main Avenue.

Learn to solder at Ignacio library

The Ignacio Community Library will present “Learn to Solder” at 3 p.m. Monday.

Participants will learn about soldering and desoldering. Practice materials will be supplied.

The event is free.

FLC business affairs panel to meet

The Business Affairs Committee of the Board of Trustees for Fort Lewis College will hold a teleconference meeting to review the 2016-17 budget at 9 a.m. Tuesday in Room 2503 of Berndt Hall at the college.

Service members to be honored May 20

The Durango Elks Lodge will celebrate National Red Shirt Day to honor service members on deployment.

The lodge has arranged for a community photograph at Ninth Street and Main Avenue under the “Red Shirt Friday Banner” at noon May 20.

Red shirts will be on sale from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday at the Elks Lodge, 901 East Second Ave.

Rotary Club to hear about Alzheimer’s

Deb Schultz will speak to the Rotary Club of Durango about Alzheimer’s disease at 6 p.m. Tuesday at the Strater Hotel, 699 Main Ave.

Schultz, a longtime educator, now serves on the Athletes to End Alzheimer’s committee.

Hwy. 160 rest area to close for repairs

The Colorado Department of Transportation will temporarily close the Sleeping Ute rest area located at 33007 U.S. Highway 160 between Cortez and Mancos.

The rest area will be closed Monday through Wednesday

Maintenance crews will be replacing a concrete walkway in need of repair.

Book club to meet May 25 in Ignacio

The Evening Book Club in Ignacio is reading I Am Malala: The Girl Who Stood Up for Education and was Shot by the Taliban, by Christina Lamb and Malala Yousafzai.

Yousafzai is the youngest person to receive the Nobel Peace Prize, which she won in 2014. The book club will meet at 6 p.m. May 25 at the Ignacio Community Library.

Books are available at the library service desk and on Overdrive.

Golf tournament to benefit education

The Durango Education Foundation’s 23rd annual Tom Hartney Golf Tournament will be held Friday at Dalton Ranch Golf Club.

The tournament is a fundraiser for the foundation. Team registration is open now.
