Enjoy spaghetti and meatballs on April 30

The 42nd annual Spaghetti and Meatball Supper will take place from 5 to 8 p.m. April 30 at the Sacred Heart Parish, 254 East Fifth Ave.

The cost for adults is $10, children 6 to 12 are $5 and children younger than 6 are free. The menu will include spaghetti, meatballs, drinks, salad, bread and pizzelli cookies.

Health department to give river update

San Juan Basin Health Department will host a community meeting, “The Animas Watershed: A Community Health Update,” at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Durango Public Library, 1900 East Third Ave.

Health and watershed experts will provide information on the current status of the Animas River and on future plans to improve the health of the watershed. Light refreshments will be provided.

Local, state and federal partners are working to create a monitoring and notification plan to inform river users should conditions on the Animas River become a health concern.

Residents can sign up for river notifications through the San Juan Basin Health website. To receive text, call, and/or email alerts from the La Plata County Code Red system, visit http://sjbhd.org/public-health-news/animas-river-health-updates/ and click on the “CodeRed button.”

Participants should make sure to check the Animas River Information box in Additional Notifications.

Life-Long lecture series continues

The Life-Long Learning Lecture Series at Fort Lewis College will present “Hell-Raising Texans in Early Durango” at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Strater Theatre, 699 Main Ave.

Mike Maddox will discuss the Stockton brothers and their gang. Maddox is an author and retired New Mexico state parks manager

Divorce, custody seminar to be held

Doing your own divorce and/or custody in Colorado will be the topic of a free seminar at 5:30 p.m. Monday, at the Durango Public Library, 1900 East Third Ave.

The seminar will be presented by Southwest Bar Volunteer Legal Aid.

Free book available to 4-year-olds

Durango Public Library is promoting early reading by providing a free picture book to every 4-year-old in Durango from Monday to April 25 as part of the statewide One Book 4 Colorado program.

One Book 4 Colorado is a statewide initiative aiming to support family reading at home and instill a love of learning in Colorado youngsters. This year’s One Book 4 Colorado finalists are One Drowsy Dragon by Ethan Long, Giraffes Can’t Dance by Giles Andreae and I Love You Stinky Face by Lisa McCourt.

The winning book will be announced on Monday.

Families of 4-year-olds can stop by the Durango Public Library any day starting Monday to pick up a copy of the book in either English or Spanish.

Books will be available during regular library hours.

One Book 4 Colorado books will also be available at Sunnyside and Fort Lewis Mesa branch libraries. Preschools and child care providers are also invited to participate. Call the library at 375-3380 for details.
