Region’s beekeepers to meet Tuesday

The Four Corners Beekeepers Association, also known as “The Buzz Club,” will hold its monthly meeting at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Florida Baptist Church near Elmore’s Corner, 30296 U.S. Highway 160.

At 6:30 p.m., there will be pre-meeting session for beginners to ask questions and get acquainted.

The club will discuss summer hive management, disease diagnosis and swarms, and members will share what they have learned about splits.

Foundation to host session about Nepal

The Karma & Jyamu Bhotia Foundation will present a lecture, “Tales and Images from Nepal,” at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Himalayan Kitchen Restaurant, 992 Main Ave.

Attendees will hear Karma Bhotia’s stories about Nepal, see photographs from recent service treks and learn about upcoming service opportunities with the nonprofit Bhotia Foundation. Admission is by donation.

Learn how to care for your power tools

Power tool maintenance will be the next topic in a free series of lectures at the Animas Valley Grange Hall.

The talk will start at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Animas Valley Grange Hall, 7271 County Road 203.

It will be presented by Will Muñoz of Kroegers Ace Hardware in Durango.

Muñoz is a STIHL factory-certified gold technician. He has experience in chain-sharpening, small gas engine repair and computer diagnostics in STIHL power equipment.

The talk will focus on spring and fall preparation maintenance to all small power equipment that is stored during the winter months.

Muñoz will cover draining the equipment, changing oil, spark plug maintenance, cleaning and proper storage.

Refreshments will be provided.

Students pedal to N.M. to battle cancer

A group of student cyclists from The University of Texas at Austin is pedaling toward Farmington to raise awareness in the fight against cancer.

Texas 4000 will visit San Juan Regional Cancer Center and the San Juan Medical Foundation to share their message at 8 a.m. Thursday.

The event will be held at the San Juan Medical Foundation, 730 S. Lake Street in Farmington. The community is invited to come and support the team.

Texas 4000 is the longest annual charity bicycle ride in the world, dedicated to cultivating student leaders and engaging communities in the fight against cancer. The 70-day trek from Austin to Alaska covers more than 4,000 miles via three different routes: the Ozarks, Rockies and Sierras.

This year, 67 students from the University of Texas are participating. The group has raised more than $480,000 for cancer research, treatment and prevention in 2016. Since Texas 4000 began in 2003, riders have raised more than $7 million in the fight against cancer.
