Genealogical society to meet Saturday

The Southwest Colorado Genealogical Society will meet at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the La Plata County Historical Society’s Animas Museum, 3065 West Second Ave.

Following a brief business meeting, Anna Hopkins-Arnold will give a presentation “Homesteaders and Miners: Using Birth Information and Land Records to Trace Pioneer Migrations.” She will discuss these historical records that can provide information about documenting ancestors’ migrations to the West. This presentation supports the Animas Museum’s Smithsonian “Journey Stories” exhibit currently at the museum.

Herbalist to discuss menopause Tuesday

Herbalist, Marija Helt, PhD, will offer a class on menopause at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Osadha Herbal Wellness.

Participants will discuss the physiology involved as one approaches and reaches menopause, as well as holistic approaches to preparing for and easing the transition. There will be a $10 optional donation.

Emergency, trauma advisory council to meet

The Southwest Regional Emergency and Trauma Advisory Council will meet from noon to 3 p.m. March 12, June 11, Sept. 10 and Dec. 10 at Durango Fire Protection District, 142 Sheppard Drive.

It is the mission of the council to maintain, improve and expand quality regional EMTS system development in Southwest Colorado

Southern Ute museum reschedules symposium

The Southern Ute Cultural Center & Museum’s Native American Scholar Symposium scheduled for today has been rescheduled and the April date will be announced soon.

Historical Society to host Heather Bailey

The San Juan Mountains Association and the La Plata County Historical Society will host a welcome reception for Heather Bailey, who will operate the new State Historical Fund Western Field Office. The reception will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Thursday at the Animas Museum, 3065 West Second Ave.The office will open Monday at 701 Camino del Rio, Suite 101.

It will serve as a regional point of contact for information and grant assistance for applicants to the State Historical Fund, a grant program of History Colorado.Refreshments will be served.

Local bird walk to be held Wednesday

A bird walk will be hosted by Weminuche Audubon Society at 9 a.m. Wednesday at For the Birds, 1560 East Second Ave.

The walks last about one hour and 15 minutes. Bring binoculars. The walks are free, but donations to the hosting group are welcome.

Public vote to decide Cutest Kid Contest Kids Rock and Allison Ragsdale Photography will host the seventh annual Cutest Kid Contest.

Parents can enter their child at Kids Rock, 563 Main Ave. There is a $20 entry fee. Portraits of children will be taken from Monday to March 15. Categories will include newborn to age 5 boy and girl. The public will vote at Kids Rock to determine the winners. Public voting will begin March 31. All contestants receive a 5”x7” portrait. Winners will be announced April 18.
