Trails 2000 to host trail work today

Trails 2000 will host trail work from 4 to 6:30 p.m. today on the South Rim Trail.

Sponsored by Mountain Bike Specialists, the event will begin Trails 2000’s Wednesday Public Trailwork Nights. Mountain Bike Specialists partnered with Specialized to provide Trails 2000 a grant to purchase new tools for the season. Participants will meet at the Big Canyon Trailhead located off of U.S. Highway 550/160. Volunteers should wear long pants, long-sleeved shirt, closed-toe shoes, sun hat, sunscreen and bring a water bottle. Trails 2000 will provide tools, instruction, food and water.

Durango to host Arbor Day celebration

The city of Durango Parks and Recreation will host the 34th annual Arbor Day Celebration at 10 a.m. Friday at the Durango Community Recreation Center outside in the amphitheater, 2700 Main Ave.

In case of bad weather, the ceremony will be held in the center’s gymnasium. The event will feature songs and skits by elementary school children. Ice cream and seedlings will be provided for the participants.

Trout Unlimited to hold fundraiser, banquet

The Five Rivers Chapter of Trout Unlimited will hold its annual fundraiser and banquet at 5:30 p.m. Saturday at the Lost Dog Bar & Lounge, 1150 Main Ave.

The event will include an auction featuring fishing trips, a spa/fishing trip to Dunton Hot Springs, rods and many other fishing and nonfishing items. Tickets are $85 for couples, $50 for individuals and can be purchased at Duranglers or at the door. Trout Unlimited is a nonprofit conservation organization devoted to preserving cold rivers.

Rotary Club of Durango to meet Tuesday

Chessa Gill, club member and Rotary Assistant Governor, will give a talk on a trip she made to Antarctica in 2003 to the Rotary Club of Durango at its meeting at 6 p.m. Tuesday at the Strater Hotel, 699 Main Ave.

The trip was on a Russian ship with passengers of marine biologists and paying guests. The crew spoke only Russian, and most passengers were from Australia and New Zealand. Visitors are welcome.

Horse center seeking volunteers

Free volunteer training to help with Equine Assisted Therapeutic Riding at Medicine Horse Center will take place from 9 a.m. to noon May 1 at the Medicine Horse location in Mancos, 40700 Road J.

The center is in need of volunteers at both the Mancos and Durango facilities. Volunteers must be available to help during the day during the week and must be capable of sustained physical activity. No horse experience is required. Training will cover all aspects of side walking and leading skills to help with therapeutic riding sessions for people with disabilities.
