Growing Partners of Southwest Colorado and the Montezuma Orchard Restoration Project will host a hands-on apple-grafting workshop as part of the Homegrown Food Retreat from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. Saturday at the Mount Lookout Grange, 680 Grand Ave., Mancos.
Participants will learn the skill of grafting and take home four heritage apple trees from historic orchards in Southwest Colorado.
The workshop is $35 for Montezuma Orchard Restoration Project members and Homegrown Food Retreat attendees and $45 for all others.
Four Corners Child Advocacy Center in Cortez announces events to acknowledge April as Child Abuse Awareness month:
On “Go Blue Fridays” people will show their support by wearing blue and submitting photos to the Four Corners Child Advocacy Center’s Facebook page. The pinwheel is the symbol of child awareness across the nation. A pinwheel garden will be set up Friday at the Cortez Welcome Center, 928 E. Main St., Cortez. The pinwheels were created by elementary students in the community. The Kids Festival will take place April 30 at the Cortez Recreation Center, 425 Roger Smith Ave., Cortez. The Southwest Colorado Genealogical Society and the La Plata County Historical Society will sponsor a presentation by author and historian Virginia Sanchez at 2 p.m. April 16 at the Animas Museum, 3065 West Second Ave.
Sanchez will discuss her research on Lafayette Head and his role as a Native American agent in Conejos from 1861 to 1875.
She will present information about his relationships with local Hispano settlers and aspects of his social, political and secret life. Admission is free and donations to the museum will be welcome.

The Ignacio School District will host a dispersal sale of old furniture and items no longer needed from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. April 16 and April 23 in the lot across from Ignacio High School located on Becker Street.
The sale will be first-come, first-served. Donations will be taken for each item to assist the School Board Scholarship Fund.
The sale will be held weather permitting.
The Ignacio School District will host a ribbon-cutting ceremony and tour of the new Ignacio School District Transportation Department from 5:30 to 6:15 p.m. Thursday at 500 County Road 319 in Ignacio.
The 2016 TLC for FLC will be held at 6 p.m. April 16 in Theatre Hall at Fort Lewis College.
TLC for FLC is the Fort Lewis College Foundation’s signature fundraiser for student scholarships and faculty grants. This year’s theme is “Speakeasy.”

Pine River Library will offer beginning genealogy classes from 6 to 7:30 p.m. April 20 and April 27.
This series will be taught by professional genealogist Anna Hopkins-Arnold and will consist of two sessions that build upon each other.
In the first session, participants will learn how to store and organize information about people in their family tree.
During the second class, people will learn how to make and use a research plan and get an introduction to genealogy resources available at the Pine River Library, on the Internet and in local archives.
