Local businesses, organizations make care packages for La Plata County youths

Several businesses and organizations around town have donated to help put together 100 care packages/activity bags for young kids and their families in La Plata County.

These bags were delivered to the La Plata Family Center and Women’s Resource Center. McDonald’s donated 100 extra value meal certificates to accompany the bags.

The bags have educational books, coloring books, McDonald’s meal coupons, stickers, playing cards, stuffed animals, pencils, crayons, first-aid kits, Frisbees, yo-yos, water bottles and various other items and toys. Even the bags may be colored.

Bags are best suited for preschool and elementary school aged children.

These groups and businesses donated: McDonald’s donated 100 meals, Durango Fire & Rescue, Bank of Colorado, Durango Police Department, Jack Turner, U.S. Forest Service San Juan National Forest (Smokey Bear), Durango Motor Co., La Plata County government, Elk Run Builders and Check Outside.

Steps were take to safeguard the bags during assembly and the centers are taking further steps to safeguard and sanitize these bags once they have them. They will be available for Durango, Bayfield and Ignacio children and there are some bags available for Spanish speaking children and families as well.
