Local concerns should be mayor’s focus

In the Herald’s July 29-30 edition, Mayor Dick White talked about climate change and sustainability in his first paragraph as though these were his major concerns.

Mayor, you’re a small-town politician in a town with very specific and immediate needs. The bear problem continues and the city tells me it will take at least two weeks to repair our bear-proof dumpster.

The city itself places non-bear-proof dumpsters on its own property. Obviously, the mayor doesn’t take this problem seriously. When asked why the dumpsters cannot be fixed quicker, lack of money is often cited, and yet the city hired on a new assistant city manager for $103,000 per year. Maybe you should put a wrench in her hands and tell her to get to work.

The city allowed our water rates to nearly double recently, while at the same time pushing for more affordable housing. The people who can’t afford housing aren’t going to be able to pay their water bill, either.

If the mayor is unwilling or unable to solve our very real problems in this town, maybe it is time for him to step aside.
